SUMMER IS COMING - TIME TO PLAY!
Summer is coming! Schoolkids are anxiously awaiting the end of school so they can be free from the routine of learning. Traditionally, summer has been the time to play – the time to have fun. Yet, too many younger kids will spend their summers glued to the television or occasionally being ferried from place to place for organized “play dates.” Too many older kids will spend their summers wrapped up in video games, or posting on social media on their smart phones. Daydreaming, silence and boredom seem to be things in the past.
Summer is coming! Adults are looking forward to vacations that bring a break from their own routine as well. Yet, too many of them will be tethered to their jobs or businesses because of their “need” to be available 24/7. If not, they may take a far-flung vacation rushing from one city to another or one country to another. They are the ones who brag that they need a vacation to recover from their vacation. For others the break in routine entails another type of work tackling long-postponed major projects around the house. When do they stop to listen to the whispers in their souls?
What ever happened to summer being the time just to have fun, just to play?
Experts tell us that human beings are biologically programmed to need challenge and variety in their lives. Unfortunately, too many people let responsibility overshadow everything else – especially their own needs. But, responsibility can be so overwhelming that it buries their spirit. They need to give themselves permission to be playful and have fun.
If you have gotten so serious about life that you’ve stopped playing, you might want to make some changes. After all, the opposite of play is not work. The opposite of play is depression.
Summer is coming! Take time to smell the flowers. Take time to laugh at the absurdities of life. Take time to play with a kid – or a dog – or a cat. Do what gives you joy. If it’s not fun don’t do it!

It is beyond me why people in this state are mute about what the governor and legislature are doing in the desire to feed the coffers of big business. Get angry people! I lived in upstate New York, where Love Canal was only the tip of the iceberg. It's already happening here. Educate yourselves. Oooh - that's right. Education is only supposed to prepare people for jobs not make them think!
