Bowlin’ at the Riv

Fall has arrived, bringing with it, cooler temps and a bit drier conditions. Area farmers are starting to harvest the corn crops and soybean plants showing their golden leaves. I think that September and October are the two most ideal months of the year.
Traveled with Dave Dickson to Schwoegler’s Park Towne Lanes in Madison last evening and caught up with former SP resident, Pete Hamilton. Pete rolled a great 740 series last week in the Towne Gypsies league and stayed hot when we were there. He started with a 237 game followed by a big 268 before finishing with a 194 for a great 699 set. Great bowling, Pete!
The Monday Night Special on Sep 21st was led by newcomer Brad Janicek. (We got his last name corrected). Brad finished with a 259 third game for his fine series of 664. Coming in at second place was Eric Heil with a 663 after finishing with a 233. His teammate, Dude Young, started with a 244 for his 654 set while Tim Herbrand was at 644 after finishing with a 259 game. Curtis Bohler managed a 638 with a 231 closing game while Aaron Braumann was at 634 and Jonathan Ames hit 630 after a 236 finale. Doug Larsen hit 611 while Garrett Pape was at 608. Crafty veteran bowler, Frank Selden, started the evening with a big 238 game for his nice 590 series.
Dave Dickson led the Tuesday afternoon Rollin’ Pins league with a 558 series with a 193 middle game. Jack Jensen was at 511 while Kevin Emshoff got close at 497 and Don Behling was a pin back at 496. Eileen Klepper finished at 415 to lead the ladies.
The pins on lanes 5 & 6 were quaking Tuesday evening during the Riviera Ladies Classic league as Andrea Murray led all bowlers with a super 735 series on big games of 247, 223 and a 265 closer. Congrats, Andrea, on a great series. Tammy Young put together a nice 612 series on games of 217, 224 and 171. Rachel Lawler was at 579 after a 237 start while Alisha Rapp hit 555 with a 203 middle game. Andrea Kersten rolled a 527 with a 213 second game while Alyssa McElwee finished at 525 and Jeanne Overboe was at an even 500.
The Wednesday night session of the Riviera Men’s Classic, with its perfect game and another four nationals, capped off a great week of bowling at the Riv. Leading all bowlers was Garret Pape with a 750 series on consistent game of 254, 257 and 239. Dan Rapp rolled a 732 on games of 221, 232 and 279 while his teammate, Scott Roelke, hit 722 with games of 236, 278 and 208. Mike Wernsing ended at 718 with games of 278, 193 and 247. Dude Young got close with a 697 after a 256 final game. Don Larsen was three pins back at 694 with a 258 closure while lefty Jeff Dyrud was at 683 with a 253 final game. Craig Overboe rolled a 675 with a 242 third game with Jason Miller supplying the fireworks with a closing game of 300 for a 658 series. Congrats, Jason, on your 6th perfect game of your bowling career. Bob Rapp was at 653 after a 233 start while John Lehan finished at 648. Doug Larsen hit 644 with Chris Huppert at 641 with a 279 middle game. Dave Dickson was at 628 while Ross Johanning was at 627 and Tom Freel ended with a 620. Mike Lien, Paul Miller, Chad Hansen and Curtis Paul were at 613, 608, 606 and 601 respectively.
Tammy Young led the ladies on Wednesday night with a 622 series on games of 198, 211 and 213. Alisha Rapp was at 549 after a 210 finish while Amanda “The Pride of Lodi” Kleinfeldt finished at 505. Speaking of Lodi, it’s great to see another veteran bowler, Jim “Admiral” Wallace, back in action again.

Bowlin’ at the Riv

And, just like that, the 2026-2027 bowling season is upon us. The adult leagues have started bowling with the junior bowlers in the middle of registration with their leagues commencing on Saturday, Oct 3rd.
The big news this summer was that The Riviera Bowl has new owners! Sauk Prairie residents, Curtis and Kim Paul, are the new proud owners, having purchased The Riv from John Meyers who had owned the establishment for a number of years. All systems are a go at The Riv to help satisfy your bowling, dining and bar needs. Best of luck to Curtis and Kim in their endeavor.
Leading all bowlers of the Spares & Strikes Forever league on Sep 12th was Jeanne Overboe who rolled a nice 610 series on games of 203, 190 and 217. Andrea Murray managed a 573 set after a 236 middle game. Leading the guys was Randy Brereton who hit 609 on games of 171, 234 and 204 while Brendan Holl was close behind at 602.
This season’s first session of the Monday Night Special on Sep 14th was led by Dude Young with a great 698 series on games of 214, 248 and 236. Welcome back to bowling at the Riv, Dude! We missed you. Newcomer Brad Janikowski rolled a 684 series on games of 266, 202 and 216 while Lucas Janikowski hit 672 with games of 202, 200 and 270. Eric Heil was at 647 with Aaron Braumann at 635. Garrett Pape hit 630 while Tom Curtis was at 627 after a 240 finale. AJ Neumann finished with a 246 game for his 624 series while Craig Overboe managed a 620. Travis Zeman, Cody Schwichtenberg and Clint Ramsey rolled 610, 606 and 602 respectively. Leading the ladies was Tammy Young with a 568 after a 213 final game while Mel Hart was at 522 and Jeanne Overboe finished at 511.
The Tuesday afternoon Rollin’ Pins league, in their 2nd session on Sep 15th, were led by Kevin Emshoff with a 543 series that included a 204 middle game. Michael Moreland started with a 200 game for his 527 series while lefty Dave Dickson managed a 505 set. Lindsay Wallace led the ladies with a 416 series after a 174 third game while Eileen Klepper was at 402.
The week #2 session of the Riviera Ladies Classic on Tuesday, Sep 15th, was led by Andrea Murray’s nice 606 series with games of 171, 160 and a big 275 finish. Rachel Lawler hit 541 with both Deb Richardson and Julie Bohler tied at 540. Tammy Young was a pin behind at 539 with Alisha Rapp a couple pins back at 537. Andrea Kersten got, oh so close, at 499.
The opening session of the Wednesday night Riviera Men’s Classic started with a bang as four bowlers opened the season with nationals. Leading all bowlers was Chris Huppert with a huge 758 series on games of 231, 237 and 290. John Lehan hit 728 with games of 247, 257 and 224 while Brendan Holl managed a 724 with games of 223, 246 and 255. Mike Wernsing was at 714 after a 279 start followed by 225 and 210. Butch Layton was a few pins short at 692 that included a 259 middle game. Mike Lien and Blake Tobias tied at 660 while Dude Young was a pin back at 659. Don Larsen hit 655 with Tiernen Shea coming in at 652. Congrats to Tiernen as this was his first ever 600 series on consistent games of 225, 213 and 213. It was fun to watch even though he was competing against me. Dan Rapp hit 633 after a 248 start while Cliff Strong was at 629 with a 259 middle game. Tom Curtis hit 625 with Troy Hauge at 617 and Paul Miller at 611. Garrett Pape hit a 605 with a 236 finale.
Alisha Rapp led the ladies with a 581 after a 223 start while Tammy Young was at 529. Amanda Kleinfeldt, the “Pride of Lodi” rolled a 527 after a 219 start. Jeanne Overboe finished at 511.

Cow Chip Parade Favor

Hey bowling families! We’re walking in the parade this year to not only promote Saturday morning youth league, but also the Riv. Curtis and I are sending a personal request out to ask that if you’re available to please walk in the parade with us. We are spot 40, starting to line up at 11:30 on Saturday the 5th.

Bowlin’ at the Riv

The end of July 2026 is drawing nigh. We completed the 11th (and final) week of the 2026 Riviera Bowl Summer League a couple days ago and I am very pleased to announce that we raised a grand total of $2970.00 for the junior, middle school and high school bowling teams. A huge thank you to all the bowlers, young and oldish, that participated this year and helped make it a big success.
Dave Loecher of the Grandpa’s Team was top bowler this final week with a great 682 series that included a 256 closing game. Butch Layton was at 678 on games of 213, 232 and 233 while Brendan Holl was 6 pins back at 672 after a 256 middle game. Doug Haselwander was in at 654 with a 225 middle game while Mike Wernsing finished at 622. Nick Hartley ended the evening at 620 with Craig Overboe at 616 and Dom Hutter and Scott Pliner tied with 605s. Bob Rapp finished out the 600+ scores with a 603.
Leading the ladies was McKenzie Ambler with an oh-so-close 598 series on games of 197, 190 and 211. Paityn Hauge, with uncle Scottie in attendance, rolled 565 with a 218 middle game. Alisha Rapp finished at 548 while her teammate Jeanne Overboe was at 544 after a 200 middle game.
Grandpa’s Team held on to their lead in the team standings to garner the league championship. High scratch individual game was a tie between Mike Lien and Mike Wernsing at 279. Hi series went to Curtis Paul with a great 749 set. Mike Wernsing rolled a 717 series with Mike Lien hitting a 701 high. Andrea Murray led the ladies with a 257 game and a 693 series. Mike Wernsing grabbed the high average with a 216 while Andrea Murray finished with a 195 average.
The fall meetings are starting very soon with the 2026 – 2027 bowling season in the offing.

Bowlin’ at the Riv

It’s been a beautiful week, weather-wise. Nighttime has been in the 50s and daytime got to mid to low 70s. Hope you enjoyed it because next week it’s back up into the 90s.
Our Junior Gold bowlers did quite well last week in competition up in Minneapolis. Oliver Harms, competing in the U16 boys grouping, finished in 103rd place out of 388 while McKenzie Ambler finished in 76th place out of 179 others in the U14 girls group. Oliver Harms, bowling in the U12 group, finished in 103rd place out of 237 fellow competitors. Paityn Hauge, competing in the U16 girls group, finished in 57th place from a field of 326. Our 4 competitors met a lot of new friends and some of their old friends during the week. It was a busy, busy week bowling, visiting with friends, hanging with the parents, etc. Paityn finished the week by bowling in a Survivors Tournament where she averaged 210 for 5 games to punch her ticket for the 2027 Junior Gold competition scheduled for Indianapolis. Special recognition goes to coaches Jake Harrison, Brendan Holl and Dylan Werner who spent the week with our bowlers and provided plenty of insight to the bowlers.
Andres Murray led the ladies with a fantastic 693 series on games of 224, 257 and 212. Jeanne Overboe finished at 583 after a 200 final game.
Mike Lien started with a 279 game after leaving a stubborn 10 pin in the 4th frame and came back with a 200 and a 222 for a 701 series. Jake Harrison rolled a 678 after a 263 closing game while Mike Wernsing was close behind at 675 after a 237 start. Paul Hellenbrand hit 647 after a 237 start with Brendan Holl at 632 with a 236 first game. Nick Hartley hit 628 with Dave Loecher at 610 and Ryan Werner at 603. Congrats to Ryan for his first official 600 series on nice games of 225, 211 and 167. Tim McCumber, despite rolling a gutter ball in the first game, finished at 601. Butch Layton, Ross Harms and Dom Hutter all got close at 599, 594 and 592 respectively.
With one week remaining in the summer league schedule Grandpa’s Team has a 6 point lead on the Wauna-Lien team.

Bowlin’ at the Riv

If you enjoy your milieu to be very hot and humid along with a very unhealthy dose of smoke exported by our neighbors to the north, this has been your week. The forecast calls for lower temperatures in the mid to low 80s starting tomorrow going through the end of next week. We definitely need a respite from the last stretch of torrid weather.
I saw that Paityn Hauge ended up in 57th place in the U16 Girls division after the first 4 rounds of qualifying at the 2026 Junior Gold competition in Minneapolis. This was her best qualifying finish in her 3 years at Junior Gold. Onward and upward, Paityn!
Leading all bowlers in the 9th session of the 2026 Riviera Bowl Summer League was Butch Layton’s 685 series on great games of 246, 235 and 205. Dave Loecher hit 653 after a 234 finish while Doug Haselwander was at 623 with a 254 middle game. Teammates Paul Hellenbrand and Rick Kalscheur of the Grandpa/s Team were tied with 608 series while Tim McCumber finished with a 602. Chuck Meier and Dom Hutter both got close with 597s.
Leading the ladies was Jackie Dyrud’s 620 series on games of 204, 194 and 222. Alisha Rapp started with a 227 game for a 573 total series. Andrea Murray hit 555.
With 2 weeks remaining in the 2026 Summer League schedule, Grandpa’s team is in first place with 49 points and are 9 points ahead of the Wauna-Lien team.

Bowlin’ at the Riv

It’s been a bit cooler this week but the forecast calls for temps to ramp up this coming week. Spent some time at the Sauk County Fair last evening among the crowds of people and many animals, both furred and feathered, and saw some of the young exhibitors lined up with goats in tow getting ready for judging.
Our young Junior Gold participants left town on Thursday for Minneapolis. They get settled into their respective hotels and then on to the various bowling venues for practice sessions. Competition commences in earnest the early part of next week. Good luck to our bowlers.
McKenzie Ambler, one of our junior bowlers, led the ladies week #8 of the 2026 Riviera Bowl Summer League with a fantastic 614 series on games of 218, 193 and 203. Great bowling, Mckenzie! Alisha Rapp, after starting out with a 232 game, quietly exited Riviera Bowl with a 528 series.
A “Mark of the Beast” 666 was in store for Mike Wernsing on games of 192, 248 and 226. Dom Hutter was 5 pins back at 661 after a 234 finishing game. Butch Layton hit 640 after a 241 third game while Ross Harms was 2 pins back at 638. Chuck Meier hit 625 with a finish of 245 and Scott Noltemeyer was at 619. Brendan Holl was at 603 and Kurt Clapper went home after an even 600 series. Two of the junior bowlers, Oliver Harms and Waylon Taylor, finished at 566 and 514 respectively.

Bowlin’ at the Riv

For those amongst you that like your weather hot and humid, you have to be enjoying it this week. Whether it’s the hot southern winds, the oppressive humidity or the blazing sun’s rays; you should be in your glory.
Paityn Hauge, one of our up and coming junior bowler stars, has recently garnered accolades attesting to her bowling abilities. She participated in the recent annual “Border Battle” which this year included the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan with the competition being appropriately named the “Lake Michigan Cup”. For the second consecutive year, Wisconsin emerged as the winner.
The Madison Area USBC this week has been naming the 2025-2026 All Association Teams for the just completed season. Paityn was awarded this prestigious distinction as a result of her dedication and drive to the sport of bowling. Kudos to you, Paityn! The sky’s the limit!
In about a week, Paityn Hauge, McKenzie Ambler, Oliver Harms and Elliot Harms along with Michael Paul will be traveling up to Minneapolis for the 2026 Junior Gold Competition where they’ll practice on different lane shots before entering the qualifying rounds leading up to the finals. Good luck to our young bowlers.
Leading all bowlers in week #7 of the 2026 Riviera Bowl Summer League was Scott Noltemeyer of the Wauna-Lien team with a great 686 series on games of 232, 258 and 196. Close behind was Dave Loecher of Grandpa’s Team with a 677. Dave started with a 205 game and then followed up with a pair of 236s. Bob Rapp finished with a 225 for a 644 set while Butch Layton rolled a 639, finishing up with a league high 259 game. Craig Overboe rolled a 616 with Dom Hutter in at 610 with Mike Wernsing rolling a 237 middle game for his second consecutive 603 series. Junior bowlers Oliver Harms and Waylon Taylor hit 574 and 538 respectively.
Junior bowler Paityn Hauge led the ladies with a nice 606 series that included a 245 finishing game. Alisha Rapp started with a 210 for her 542 series while Kim Paul managed a 517 set.
