The Junk in your trunk (hips) are emotional stressors. Yoga creates emotional releases marked by a flood of tears in some cases. Focus on this long enough through hip opening and you will release anxiety, fear, depression, and sadness.

Do you notice deeply ingrained mental habits of worry?
Opening your hips can unlock mentally stuck thought patterns as well. Hips are tight because of dense musculature around the hip joint, inside the pelvis, near the groin, and around the upper thigh and low back.

Become aware of physical tightness in the hips it leads you to understanding your mental blockages. By loosening your hip joints you can send messages to nerve endings at the spine and all the way to the brain telling it to stop releasing stress hormones.

Hip strength and flexibility are imperative to proper alignment, balance and posture.

We all lead busy lives. Our kids, too! They are constantly bombarded with academic pressures, innumerable lessons, sports practices, play dates, and the rigors of just growing up! All of these responsibilities leave our children little opportunity to just relax and be still. This constant stress can have negative consequences to our kids’ health, both mentally and physically.

Obviously children need to learn to find a quiet place inside themselves, a place to relax and be calm, regardless of what situation they find themselves. KIDDING AROUND YOGA, created by Haris Lender (ERYT 500), teaches these tools in a clear, engaging way.

Each KIDDING AROUND YOGA (KAY) class is a thorough, age-appropriate Yoga practice and includes:

Breathing instruction: Children learn ways to energize, concentrate, and reduce stress simply by controlling their own breath!

Relaxation techniques: Students learn ways to settle in their mind, allowing calming and healing to begin.

Stretching and strengthening poses: Poses in a KAY class are not only fun, but give children confidence, a strong and flexible body, and a way to self soothe.

Music, games, and imagination: KAY’s magic is our playfulness, keeping your child motivated, excited, and moving. This is not your typical Yoga class.

A KAY class gets children singing, dancing, skipping, marching, jogging, shaking, laughing, hopping, limbo, and storytelling ALL while practicing Yoga to original KAY music.

Highly trained, passionate KAY certified teachers: My specialized training has given me the tools, knowledge, and experience to lead a creative and well-managed kids’ Yoga class.

Bottle Gourd also is known as Lauki is one of the healthiest and most ancient vegetables. It was mentioned in the earliest Ayurvedic texts during the Samhita period and was called Alabu. It’s the perfect food during the hot months of summer as its cooling, hydrating, moistening, and restores minerals.

When Bottle Gourd is fully ripe it has a sweet rasa (taste), cold vīrya (cools the body), and sweet vipāka (nourishes the body). It is 92% water (pure plant sap) and balances both vata and pitta, and increases kapha in a healthy way. It’s a rich source of vitamin C, B, and K as well as sodium, calcium, iron, and zinc.

Ayurvedic Uses:

• Pitta gastritis with a burning sensation, malabsorption

• Cleanses urinary bladder

• Rejuvenates liver and gall bladder function

• Improves bowel movements

• Reduces gouty arthritis

• Headache (vata or pitta type)

The easiest way to prepare a bottle gourd is to juice it. For therapeutic benefit, it’s best to have it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Only make the amount you will drink because it oxidizes (turns brown) very fast. Bottle gourd is versatile and there are many recipes for curry, dhal, chutney, raita, and much more.

Bottle Gourd Juice

• 1 ½ cups bottle gourd

• ¼ cup mint leaves packed

• ¼ cup cilantro leaves packed

• ¼ inch piece ginger

• 1 Tbls. fresh lemon juice

• ½ tsp. rock salt

• ¼ tsp. black pepper

• 1 ½ cups purified water

1) Wash, peel and chop the bottle gourd. Make sure it tastes sweet rather than bitter. If bitter then DO NOT make juice. If sweet then add to a blender.

2) Add mint leaves, coriander leaves, ginger, fresh lemon juice, rock salt, black pepper, and ½ cup of water. Blend until a smooth paste.

3) Add the remaining water and blend well. Strain using a wide mesh strainer and a spoon to push it through, it will be thick. Pour the juice into a glass and drink right away.

Blessings to the wonderful Ayurveda doctors/ professors @ for the wonderful Ayurveda and Yoga Therapy Programs. It was an amazing jam packed experience of knowledge, hands on training and deep nutritional preparations for healing the body, mind and spirit.

Our ancestors and many of us today use many earthly concoctions to heal body, mind and spirit.
An abundance of respect and appreciation to our teachers and ancestors for passing along the teachings to us and our future generations to have a choice in what we put in our body and what we do not put in our body.

A celebration and honoring of cultural practices that brings us closer to spirit.
