Tuesday’s Tip and Reminder

At Savannah Sport & Wellness, we see and know a lot of runners.
As the temperatures and humidity rise,
we want to remind you of these basic, but important tips.
Start slow and end slow and slow it down. Warming up and cooling down are always important but even more so when the temperatures are high. Also, taking a slower pace is important because your body has to work extra hard in the heat and humidity.

How to find a good massage therapist

Do you know what it takes to make a good massage therapist? What’s your massage therapist licensed and schooled in? Do you know?

Massage therapists are licensed by each state. Each State has different requirements for licensure. Most states (including GA) require the completion of an approved massage therapy school. For Georgia the program must be a minimum of 500 hours, but this varies by state. After completing school, students in most states must pass the MBLEx (Massage & Bodywork Licensing exam). This information must be submitted to the state to obtain a license to practice. In the state of GA, licenses must be renewed every two years and therapists must submit proof of 24 hours of continuing education taken in that two year period, 12 hours must be hands on instruction.

Massage therapists can work in a variety of settings including, spas, gyms, hospitals, chiropractic offices, home offices, sports teams, cruise ships, hotels, etc. There are also many types of massage, including but not limited to Swedish, Deep Tissue, Pre-natal, hot stones, Thai, Myofascial Release, lymphatic drainage and more. Some of these require continuing education, while other are taught in most massage therapy schools.

Bosu Squat

Bosu squats are an excellent exercise that strengthens the quads, hamstrings, glutes and by using the bosu ball this helps to stabilise the core as well.
A bosu ball is a great addition to training. Not only is it a balance aid, helping users coordinate muscles and nerves for unstable conditions that you experience in everyday life, but it also assists in a number of other types of training, such as stretching, rehabilitation, and strength training.

Hammer in the basics

#1 Clean Up Your Diet
Eliminate all processed, starchy and sugary foods. Including anything you’re intolerant to (e.g. dairy/gluten). Replace them with things like gluten-free oats, sweet potatoes, and brown rice.

#2 Set A Protein Goal
Use your lean body weight (total scale weight minus your body fat percentage) and multiple this by 2.5 grams per kg.

#3 Hit A Water Goal
Aim to drink at least 2-3 liters (minimum) per day. Staying hydrated while losing weight is very important and aids in seeing results.

#4 Keep A Daily Log Of Your Food
This will help show how consistent you are being. This helps accountability and helps acknowledge the intake reality.

#5 Add In One Extra Training Session
If you have been exercising three times a week, then add in an extra session. This will help break through to the results you are looking for.

Side Lunge

Side or lateral lunge
Start standing tall, feet hip-width distance apart. Take a wide step out to the side. Bend your knee as you push your hips back. Keep both feet flat and facing forward on the floor throughout the lunge. Lateral lunges develop balance, stability, and strength. They work your inner and outer thighs.

The slide side lunge
The sliding lateral lunge improves strength and coordination throughout the lower body while increasing hip flexibility and mobility.

Side lunges of any kind are great for runners, working on muscles not necessarily firing when running. Lateral movement patterns help strengthen weak muscles, and help keep all of the leg muscles working in balance.

The figure four single leg squat is a variation on the traditional air squat that adds components of core, balance and flexibility to create a challenging and effective squat variation exercise. Figure 4 squats are an advanced movment that requires skill and practice to complete.

Mondays Move: The Lunge!
Progress your lunges or challenge your legs by moving from a more simple reverse or static lunge to walking or pulsing or even lunge to lift, really challenging yourself. Lunges make shapely legs and help with balance, stability, alignment and symmetry.
Lunges work the core and everything from the waist down. A lunge can refer to any position of the human body where one leg is positioned forward with knee bent and foot flat on the ground while the other leg is positioned behind or to the side. It is used by athletes in cross-training for sports, by weight-trainers as a fitness exercise, and by practitioners of yoga as part of an Asana regimen.
