July 1st marks the the first day of intern year for young physicians all around the USA. It’s sort of momentous day - you are allowed the privilege of a “real” white coat and have just completed 4 rigorous years of med school, passed at least two board exams, and spent countless hours in travel and in interviews to gain a residency spot. It makes the beginning of residency. Residency is the next phase of training for American physicians. It can last from 3 - 6 years.

My first day was 17 years ago. It was the start of a four year residency program. I remember shaking as I donned my white coat and showing up for morning rounds with my Senior resident. I remember my first patient. I remember feeling so grateful for the opportunity. I still am. Becoming a physician is commiting to lifelong learning. Effective November 20, 2020, all regions in the State will operate under the new mitigation requirements to combat the surge of COVID-19 across Illinois.
⠀
IDPH will continue to track the positivity rates and hospital capacity metrics in regions over a 14-day monitoring period to determine if mitigations can be relaxed, if additional mitigations are required, or if current mitigation should remain in place.

In order to see a removal of Tier 3 mitigations and transition to Tier 2, a region must experience less than 12 percent test positivity rate for three consecutive days AND greater than 20 percent available intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital bed availability AND declining 7-day average COVID hospitalizations in 7 out of the last 10 days.

Which entities willbe chargedwith enforcementofthese newrules?
• State and local law enforcement along with local health departments and the Illinois Department of Public Health.

What are the gathering limitations under the Tier 3 Resurgence mitigations?
• Indoor gatherings of more than one household are prohibited.

How Effective is the Flu Vaccine? Since health officials started tracking it in 2003, effectiveness of the flu shot has varied from year to year, averaging at 40%.

We just need a mask for Berry the pink bear and we would be set. More and more data is coming out that supports the idea that if all of us masked appropriately then we could prevent new waves of Covid19 infections. When you mask, you are telling the person next to you that you care for their well being. It’s an act of service, if you will. We are at a critical time right now in Covid19 speak. States have reopened, summer has started and we are tired! But sadly, the same concerns we had at the onset of this pandemic still exist. We are still concerned about our most vulnerable community members and we are worried about overloading our health systems. There’s a lot that we do not know about Covid19 but we do know that masking, maintaining physical distance, reducing the number of people gathered in indoor spaces, washing hands WORK. Let’s urge each other to keep going!

Masks help stop the spread of coronavirus – the science is simple and I'm one of 100 experts urging governors to require public mask-wearing Recommendations around mask usage are confusing. The science isn't. Evidence shows that masks are extremely effective to slow the coronavirus and may be the best tool available right now to fight it.

Blue skies and sunshine ☀️, we missed you these past couple of days! So starting today, May 1, residents of Illinois are required to wear a face mask in public. Illinois remains under a stay-at-home order at least until the end of May. The mask rule is an extension of current social distancing guideline.

Although the CDC initially advised against the general public wearing masks, research now suggests that Covid19 infections are being spread by people who have no clear symptoms. Since we don’t know who is infected, everyone over the age of 2 (regardless of symptoms), should wear a mask. This, along with maintaining social distance, proper hand washing and sanitizing. Where do you need to mask? Anywhere it is difficult to maintain 6 ft of social distancing. Examples include:

• when you are out shopping at essential businesses like the grocery store or pharmacy
• when you go to the doctor • interacting with customers, clients or coworkers
• ANYTIME you have to be out and you are sick, coughing or sneezing *
You don’t need to wear a mask when:
• you’re running or walking in your neighborhood (unless you want to - no judging!)
• hanging out on your own property *
A few quick mask tips:
• whatever mask you use should cover your nose and your mouth
• CDC recommends cloth masks which are becoming widely available locally and through several online companies (waiting on my shipment to come in!) •wash/sanitize your hands before and after wearing a mask
• when taking off the mask, avoid touching the outside surface
• wash your cloth mask after each use
