The most successful athletes those who love as their authentic selves. This means being honest and accepting who you are, strengths and uniqueness of it all as it shapes your sense of self.

Living your authentic self beings confident in who you are and making a stand to ensure that you build an environment around you rooted in social support and empowerment for yourself and the people around you. Taking it a step further, it also means you demand the same from others to ensure that inclusion and acceptance of ourselves applies to everybody.

Athletes who live authentically know it’s more than just “sport”. It’s about channeling the best of you into your sport and using sport as a platform to express yourself and empower change in your community.

Recently, an event called was held, organized by Sports Media LGBT+, LEAP Sports Scotland and Pride of the Terraces that brought forward the discussion on authenticity in sport. Read about it via Dirk Smith/Dirk Smith's recaps on Compete Sports Diversity.

Thanks to Dirk Smith from Compete for the write-up on Part 2 of our event with Pride of the Terraces LEAP Sports Scotland! 🙏
As part of the panel discussion on how living authentically has helped people in sports “elevate their game” and improve their performance. Scottish Curling and Olympics medalist, Bruce Mouat shares his experiences after competing at the olympics and winning a silver medal as an openly gay athlete. He talks about how this had a positive impact on himself, his community, LGBTQI representation in sport and curling as a sport.

“This literature review makes it clear that we need more scientific data derived from methodologically sound research focused on trans women athletes to build a foundation of solid evidence and to ultimately guide policy recommendations. The review suggests that sports should support inclusion of trans women in the female category in sport until there is robust and peer-reviewed evidence that it is not safe or fair for other competitors,” said Paul Melia, CCES president and CEO.

Psychological Effects of Discrimination in Sport // LGBTQI Sport & Physical Activity Conference 2022

Our managing editor of sports and director of education, Dirk Smith/Dirk Smith delivered his presentation from the LEAP Sports Scotland 2022 LGBTIQ Sport and Physical Activity Conference. Unfortunately I had to rush through my presentation due to time constraints, but fortunately a lot of the foundation content was already established by previous presenters so I was able to spend more time on the motivational science of it all.

This is the third time I’ve delivered this presentation on the Psychological Impact of Discrimination on Sports Performance, for this kind of event, but the first time I’ve gotten to do it in person instead of Zoom. So I am excited to have a full room of people to present to and a nice video/photos to take from it. Also included cameos from CHEER Colorado and PGFFL and I received a lot of positive feedback on both the content and my presentation skills. Overall it was a great success! 🏳️‍🌈😊
