My 90 yrs. old client Lee still drives to my studio for Therapeutic PILATES. She has scoliosis that we are working on to get her out pain and discomfort. We use Therapeutic PILATES and Rebalance Sequence to correct her posture.

Footwork on the Reformer is not like Leg Press in the gym. One of the difference is the focus or essence of the work is not to build bigger thighs but activate your core muscles while pressing on spring resistance that serves as compression. Are you able to press against resistance while keeping the spine Neutral Spine and Neutral Pelvis? Another difference is you work on the intrinsic muscles of the feet. The different feet position pushing against a narrow bar challenges the joint stability of your feet. Our feet has 26 bones and 36 joints.

Deep Squat is part of many functional movement. Unfortunately, we don’t practice deep squating anymore in our modern day to day living unless you’re an Asian. Extremity mobility, postural control, pelvic and core stability are all present in a deep squat movement pattern. Try doing it. Does your toes turn out when you squat?
Does your arms overhead go over your toes?
You can’t bring your hips to parallel or below.
If one or all of the above is present, it’s a fail.

Simple exercises can be sometimes hard for some people. We have 600 muscles in our body but not all of their functions are the same. For example our glutes or buttocks primary job is to move us. When you are being chase by a predator you have to run quickly. These are called Phasic muscles. They have more fast twitch muscles (51%). They are powerful but gets tired quickly. In PILATES we used more the tonic muscles which has 51% slow twitch muscles. They have more endurance. It’s main purpose is to stabilize our joints and body against gravity. But if they are weak even the simple exercises you do will feel hard because your muscles will begin to compensate by using your phasic muscles which gets tired quickly and already doing other jobs. The key is to make sure both mover (phasic ) and stabilizer muscles (tonic) do their own jobs. I combine both strength training and PILATES to do the job.

Another day at the office helping people understand that their muscles are not their stabilizers. Our muscles are movers and our bones spacers. Our Fascial system are the ones that forms our structure, and stabilizes our body. The fitness world are still following old science from the 70’s and 80’s. The new science tells that us we have neglected the Fascial system as part of our overall health to live a pain free life.

Jenni completed her Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2013 and Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 2009. She worked as a pediatric nurse before pursuing a career in PT. She has worked in several traditional outpatient physical therapy clinics and 3D motion analysis at Phoenix Children’s Hospital for gait analysis and return to sport testing. She started her own PT practice in 2020. We are very lucky to have her on our Sommet Team! She’s also the owner of Triumph Physical Therapy

Jenni is a worldclass Ironwoman and recently competed Ironman World Championship in St. George and have qualified for Kona next year. Find a comfortable position

Keep your arms and legs uncrossed

Allow your eyes to close

Bring your awareness to your breath

Take a deep inhale to your nose hold it for a few seconds and exhale

As you exhale let your body relax

Let your body sink into the surface below you

Letting go of all negative thoughts

Be patient at the end of the exhale

Let your exhale finished

Slowly allow your breath pattern to normalize

Notice how relax you’ve become.
