Awards - Grand Canyon Council

Council Honors
The Grand Canyon Council honors volunteer Scouters who provide exceptional service and leadership to youth and Scouting. The District Award of Merit is awarded for service to youth at the district level. The Meritorious Service Star is awarded for service to Scouting at the district or council level. The Silver Beaver, a National honor, is awarded for exceptional service to youth at the council level. The Distinguished Service Star is awarded for distinguished service to Scouting, typically to individuals who had previously received their Silver Beaver. The North Star is awarded to non-Scouters for distinguished service to youth at the council level.

Nominations for these council honors are open until October 15 of each year. Additional information for these three awards is available here and the on-line nomination process appear below. Please do not notify a nominee of a nomination to avoid disappointment should the award not be granted.

Meritorious Service Star
Awarded for outstanding Council, district, or unit service for more than five years.

The Meritorious Service Star, created in 2016 by the Grand Canyon Council, is a council award presented in the same manner that Silver Beaver is a national award presented by councils. The award is available to Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the council, district or unit level over a period of least five years. It usually precedes the Silver Beaver and follows the District Award of Merit. The award is made available annually on the basis of 1 for each 40 traditional units or fraction thereof. The council need not present all the awards to which it is entitled each year.

The Silver Beaver
Awarded to Scouters who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service at the Council level.

The Silver Beaver was introduced in 1931 and is a national award presented by councils. The award is available to registered Scouters 21 years of age and older who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given at the council level. The award is available annually on the basis of 1 for each 60 units or fraction thereof. Councils not using their full allotment in any year may accumulate the unused portion for use in any subsequent year.

Distinguished Service Star
Awarded for outstanding Council, district, or unit service for more than fifteen years.

The Distinguished Service Star, created in 2016 by the Grand Canyon Council, is a lifetime achievement award presented in the same manner that Silver Beaver is a national award presented by councils. The award is available to Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the council, district or unit level over a period of at least 15 years, and is most often awarded to Silver Beaver or Meritorious Service Star recipients who have continued to give distinguished service. The award is made available annually on the basis of 1 for each 250 traditional units or fraction thereof. The council need not present all the awards to which it is entitled each year.

Sonoran Sunset Scouts provide service in their communities, we’re proud of them and here's another example.

Alex Palomo of Troop 526 in Glendale was able to complete his Eagle project in Sept/Oct. adjusting to meet COVID restrictions, here is a write up from Alex regarding his Eagle project:

“The reason why I chose the Hand Washing Station project for my Eagle Project was because I saw on the news that the charity Red Feather was making hand washing stations for the Navajo and Hopi Nations. I started thinking it would be a great thing to do to help the ones in need. The Navajo and Hopi Nations by Flagstaff have barely enough running water on their reservations. Another reason was that the reservations were greatly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. By making these hand washing stations, it would help prevent the spread of Covid-19 and improve hygiene.

“I wanted to do an assembly line to build the hand washing stations. Due to Covid-19, I modified the plan where we only work in small groups and no parts were shared among the groups. We also completed three separate build days. The timeline was consistently extended, thankfully my goal was still met.

“We made 20 trashcan versions of the hand washing stations. Thanks to a generous donation from the Coca-Cola distributors, we were able to make twenty-one 35-gallon barrel stations and twelve 55-gallon barrel stations. All the other essential parts to make the stations donated by Home Depot and Lowes. With help from Troop leaders, we were able to adapt the trash can design to work with barrels. In the end, there were a total of 53 hand washing stations. We dropped them off in Flagstaff, and Red Feather delivered them to the Tuba City area, Kykotsmovi, Bacavi, Indian Wells.”

Sonoran Sunset Scouts are also getting outdoors and enjoying the beauty of winter in Arizona.

On November 27th the Troop had a weekend campout. At this campout the Scouts put together a demonstration of the seven priorities of Wilderness Survival for the incoming Webelos to experience. December 13th the Troop held an outdoor Cross Over for the incoming Scouts. At Court of Honor, we had 5 Scouts rank up (3 First Class and 2 Star Ranks), and 17 Merit Badges were awarded. The Scouts also held their holiday party, where the new Scouts were invited to participate in a “white elephant” gift exchange.

Sonoran Sunset's roving Scout, Sydney, spends each month with a different Pack to find out all the fun things our Cub Scouts do and learn. Sydney spent December with our District Commissioner, Grandpa Tom Hamlett, and had the following to say about it…

“Well, December finally arrived, and I got a chance to go spend time with Grandpa Tom for a months’ worth of adventure. There was only one major stipulation, and that was that I entered 2021 without a tattoo and no BAD non-scout like habits. That seemed like a pretty tall order to me, but Gramps put two fingers in the air with the Cub Scout sign and recited the Cub Scout promise to “Do Your Best.”

“Due to the on-going (which seems like a lifetime to me) COVID 19 shutdown, I was unable to participate in the annual Wreaths Across America day, but Gramps snuck (oops, I mean took me) out to the National Cemetery on the Thursday before, so I could as least pay my respects to the servicemen and women who made our country free. I was filled with emotion and lots of pride to be an American as well as a Cub Scout. Gramps took a few pictures for my scrapbook.

“Christmas was just around the corner and it was all I could do to contain myself from the excitement. I was hoping that Elf on a Shelf was not somewhere in Grandpas house watching me and sending Santa bad reports. The last thing I needed was a lump or two of coal. I guess I must have been surprisingly good because Santa brought me one of my favorite Hallmark ornaments…. Snoopy and Beagle Scout pals portaging a canoe. It was really really special and holds a special place in my collection.

“I finished the month by doing a good turn for my neighbors, helping them with their Christmas decorations. They were happy to have them all packed up until next December.

“I cannot wait to go on my next adventure this month and start the new year off right with a new bunch of “Cubby Buddy’s.”

Scout’n on,

Sydney
