Just Roughin' It

Just Roughin' It

For the past five years, we’ve invited the Arizona Trail community to help us complete the entire length of the Arizona Trail in 24 hours through our ambitious AZT in a Day initiative. We are excited to report that on October 8, at least 414 people participated. There were 318 hikers, 4 runners, 47 mountain bikers, and 15 equestrians. At least 96 family and friends were there to provide shuttles, and 217 people donated to the cause. We had a wide range of ages represented, with the youngest only two weeks old.

As a community, we logged 3,380 trail miles in 24 hours. That’s enough miles to cover the Arizona Trail’s 800-mile length over four times. Overgrowth and thunderstorms left a good portion of the trail difficult to traverse. Several hikers reported that the weather kept them from their sections, which added greatly to the difficulty of completing the day’s challenge and keeping spirits high.

While we wish we could report that "we did it," we ended up with a few miles not covered within a remote wilderness area on the Tonto National Forest. So we are confident that together we completed 99% of AZT in a Day! If you were among the many folks out on the trail on October 8, thank you!

We’d also like to express our sincere gratitude to Copperstate Farms for sponsoring this year’s event, and all the businesses who donated raffle prizes, including REICo-op; Erem Footwear; Desert Mountain Desperados Trail Scouts; Creedbilt; Just Roughin' It; and the Kaibab Lodge.

Please save the date for Saturday, October 7, 2023 when we attempt to make history by covering all 800 miles. We can’t do it without you!

I dropped into the Pima Crossing store to look for trekking poles after a disaster trying to purchase them from amazon. The service there was excellent. Debbie showed me my options and explained the various features. I am so happy with my new trek poles and can't wait to start using them.
🙌High Fives going out to Just Roughin' It for supporting the AZT!

⛰Just Roughin’ It is locally owned and operated by an Arizona native and an upstate New York transplant. It was conceived in 2006 by Ray and Debbie Hendricks from the crazy idea that owning and operating a guide service would be a great idea. Well, turns out, it was. And after 12 years of guiding a several thousand people on backpacking trips in Grand Canyon, Havasupai, Superstition Wilderness, Paria Canyon, Yosemite and Olympic National Park, we decided starting a brick and click (physical retail location that also sells online) would also be a great idea. So far, so good. So while we no longer offer full service guided trips (be sure to check out our DIY trips), we can still share our knowledge of the outdoors with you – and sell you stuff. Having a location that serves the local community of metro Phoenix is super cool and getting people out to appreciate all the outdoor recreation Arizona, and the rest of the world, has to offer (and there is A LOT) is even super cooler.
A special thank you to our awesome friends at Just Roughin' It for the donation of another two cases of plush bunnies for our boutique! The plush bunnies were a huge hit with our shoppers. :) Be sure to stop by for the softest plush bunny you've ever seen. Thank you so much to Just Roughin' It for all they do for the bunnies! We greatly appreciate your kindness and generosity.

As of Monday, Indian Garden at is now Havasupai Gardens!

“Superintendent Ed Keable called the renaming ‘long overdue’ given Havasupai Tribe’s history in the area before Park officials forcibly removed them nearly a century ago.” The U.S. Board of Geographic Names voted unanimously for the name change earlier this month. The National Park Service requested the name change on behalf of the Havasupai Tribe.

There is an amazing book about the Havasupai people titled “I Am the Grand Canyon: The Story of the Havasupai People” by Stephen Hirst. Anyone that spends anytime at Grand Canyon should know about those that lived there (and still do in the Village of Supai). The book is available at our store or be sure to check it out at a local bookstore.

Please join us for a talk and book signing ON TUESDAY, NOV 1 @ 6PM with Sebastian Copeland and his newest book, POLAR EXPLORATIONS, documenting his forty-three days crossing the Greenland ice sheet without outside support. In the process, he set a new world record for the longest distance traveled on kites and skis, covering 370 miles over one twenty-four-hour period. Copeland also led the first east-to-west transcontinental crossing of Antarctica by skis and kites via two of its poles, setting three world records over the 2,500-mile, eighty-four-day expedition. Named one of the world’s 25 top adventurers of the last 25 years by Men’s Journal, he is a climate analyst, award-winning photographer and aspirational athlete and combines these tools to powerfully communicate the urgency of action on climate change and sustainable growth.

An international speaker on climate crisis, Copeland has been featured on television and radio (Larry King Live, CBS, NPR, Air America) and has addressed audiences at the United Nations, at the COP21 in Paris, the World Affairs Council, the General Assembly on Climate in New Orleans and the George Eastman House. He has spoken for Hewlett Packard, VF Corp, Canon, BMW, BNP Paribas, Google’s headquarters and to Apple’s Senior Design Team amongst many others. His 2021 TEDx talk offers a new provocative approach to bridge the gap between humans and Nature. Sebastian is also the Founder and Chairman of The Sedna Foundation – a non-profit organization dedicated to raising support and awareness of environmental issues in the front lines of climate change.

This event will be held at our Scottsdale store. Details in bio.

October hiking tip: Watch out for eye-level sticks. So when you’re hiking, keep your eyes open, but be prepared to shut them quickly.

Hiking with your dog? Make sure you are aware that most dogs cannot handle temperatures over 90 F. Add lack of shade (temps in the sun are about 20 F hotter than shade temps), lack of water and strenuous activity, and your best bud is not going to fair well. Why am I telling you this? Because on Wednesday, Diego the 125 lb German Shepard had to be rescued from Tom’s Thumb due to heat exhaustion. He is fine but drank five bottles of water provided by rescuers and carried down the mountain. And while the high temps were 86 F, it was extremely humid AND all dogs handle the heat differently.

Tips to avoid heat exhaustion on the trail for you and your best bud…
1. Hike early, late or not at all with your dog until temps are consistently 85 F or less and have a dew point of less than 50. Humidity and heat increases the relative temperature.
2. Take a lot of water. Many dog gear brands have collapsible water bowls that are very easy to carry. A small pack for your dog to carry the extra weight of the water helps ensure you have plenty for everyone!
3. Cooling vests are amazing and keep your pooch cool via evaporative cooling. We have them at the store if you want to check them out.
4. Hiking boots for your dog like the Grip Trex from will protect your dog’s paws from the hot trails (not to mention thorns, sharp rocks and cactus needles that can also hinder your hike).
5. If your dog is showing any signs of overheating like heavy panting, extreme thirst, bright red tongue and gums and lethargy, abort your hike. There is no “prize” for finishing.
6. As with people, the fitness level, acclimation and age of your dog will have much to do with how she handles whatever hike you take her on.

If you are in the market for some gear to ensure you and your pooch are ready for a desert hike, bring your pup in to the store and we can help make sure your dog has what she needs to hike safely. Or visit any of you locally owned pet stores.

If you are hiking Grand Canyon any time soon, water is off at 3 and 1.5 mile rest houses along the Bright Angel Trail and Cottonwood use area and Manazanita rest area along the North Kaibab Trail due to a trans canyon pipeline break. This means you need to ensure you have plenty of water when hiking Bright Angel Trail between the South Rim and Indian Garden and on the North Kaibab Trail between Supai Tunnel and Phantom Ranch (a long, hot 12 mile stretch).

AND it is going to be 112 to 116 F over the next few days.

Something I learned today…Late May of this year, Asteroid 7335 made a close trip past the Earth. It was 4x larger than the Empire State Building according to AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Lada. Also according to Lada, if measured in the well-known giraffe metric, it was 350 giraffes tall.

Grand Canyon from the South Rim via South Kaibab Trail is also 4x the Empire State Building, and therefore is 350 giraffes deep. Amazing!!🧐

Stage 2 fire restrictions begin TODAY for all National Forests and most public lands in Arizona.

During Stage 2 fire restrictions, the following is prohibited…

- Igniting, building, maintaining or using a fire, including charcoal and briquettes. This includes any fires within developed recreation sites. Also includes smudge pots and wood stoves.
- smoking outside (and use your ashtrays, or whatever, in your vehicles people! The world is not your ash tray!)
- other stuff liking operating torches with open flames or anything with combustible engines.

Violators are subject to a fine of up to $5000, jail time of up to 6 months or both.

Also, refrain for shooting off fire works (which is always illegal in National forests), using fi****ms and driving/parking your vehicle over dry vegetation. All these things can start a fire.

Use of stoves or grills files by pressurized liquid petroleum or pressurized liquid petroleum gas is allowed. This means you have to be able to put out you flame with a turn of a k**b, flick of a switch.
