Do we still need to offer a baseline template for yoga asana? Yep. ✅
Do we need to be more flexible and exploratory with those invitations? Yep. ✅
Just as with most things in life, there is a spectrum here and we should appreciate the nuance rather than fear it.

Why cueing "draw your shoulder blades down your back" while reaching your arms overhead is not ideal.
First, I ask ...Which part of the shoulder blade am I supposed to pull down? Lateral border? Medial? Why? 🤔
Once your humerus goes beyond 90 degrees of flexion, the scapula NEEDS to upwardly rotate. Don’t just take my word for it.
👀 Google scapulohumeral rhythm, or watch a YouTube tutorial, or take an anatomy course.
Do you know the “why” behind your cues? Or are you using the cue because you learned it in your YTT? 📚
Maybe it’s time to audit your cues and see if they hold up under the lens of functional movement. Do you pull your shoulder blades down when you reach for something on the top shelf of your closet? 🧐
There’s a difference between scapular ELEVATION and LATERAL ROTATION. ✅
Lemme have 'em.
I hope to be offering my Human Movement Workshop, Applications for Yoga Teachers SOON. Message me for more info.

Dynamic > Static
Responsive > Rigid
Dynamic Responsiveness = Stability
That is the TLDR version. Here’s the rest ...
Today in Strong & Slow Flow we riffed off of yesterday’s dynamic challenge, adding new variation and extra “time in transition” ⏳
Less focus on nailing a pose, more focus on getting there and back. 🔄
Exploring our edges while still maintaining control as we approach end ranges. 💯
Moving in all three planes offers nutrition for our our meat suit and our hard drive 🧠 🧩
We practiced with various arm positions to notice how our shoulder blades and arms can play a role in spinal rotation. 💪🏼
It’s intriguing to observe how much more core effort is required to twist without using our arms as leverage 😅
No doubt we will be feeling our obliques tomorrow, and we didn’t even do any “core work” 😉 😉 😉

Hip-py sequence ♾
Triplane hip resiliency has been the focus of my public classes during February. This is the first of two hip modules for my 2020 class curriculum. We've explored our active range compared to our passive range in multiple poses, and added in a little extra nutritious movement in neglected movements such as hip internal rotation. We have a new perspective on what the phrase "hip opening" means to us. Our hips are feeling STRONG and capable! 💪🏼
During the month of March my classes will be all about transitions! "Stabilize Before You Mobilize, How Slow Can You Go?!" Last weekend at our Group Fitness meeting at Mountainside, I led a workshop on Creative Transitions. I'm hoping to offer a more in-depth teacher workshop in the future. This is why I do my CAR’s 🤩
We get injured in the ranges we don’t train. Cholla Trail is pretty technical, and my ankles, knees and hips got put to the test today. 💪🏼
There was an airlift rescue on the mountain prior to our arrival. I hope the gentleman has a speedy recovery. 💙
My handstands are pretty solid these days too, even though I haven’t been practicing them much. I am doing other work that gives me the prerequisites needed for handstand. Loaded wrist extension, shoulder mobility and strength, good proprioception, and core stability and responsiveness. 👌🏼
I’m pretty stoked to be taking RKM with @coachzachdeck and @danidevita_ this month.🥳
After taking @karlanderson87’s Kinstretch class I realized how much I value this type of practice. It’s such a smart compliment to yoga and strength training. 🔥
FRC shines a light on my body blind spots, and at 49 I need to stay ahead of them. 🔦

Having a strong core starts with understanding pressure systems. Join me and @sarapaigeyoga in my upcoming workshop to discuss the anatomy of breathing. I will be reviewing the mechanics of respiration and how we can use this info not only during #pranayama practice but also how we can create better cues for the different shapes of an asana practice.
Save the date because this is open to the public:
Sunday November 10th at 12pm Mountainside Pavillions. ☝🏼For more info and registration info click the link in my bio ☝🏼

As part of the B-Moved Yoga Teacher training, I’m super stoked to partner up with one of my mentors and an all around amazing human.
Dr. Mary Ellen Yasay @yogadoc1218 will present “The 4 areas of compression as we age, and what we can do about it"
This workshop is open to teachers and students alike. If you're ready to understand your practice on a deeper level physiologically, this workshop will give you a deeper understanding of movement. You'll learn how yoga helps open up the "stuck" and tight areas of your body that can cause problems as we march through life, and how to include little movements that make a big difference on the mat.
My website link is in my bio. The link to register will be posted under “Events” soon.

Thoughts? This article is in your resources. It’s relevant to some of our comments about my breathing blog post. Ujjayi is similar to whispering. Whispering can cause strain on vocal chords. Moderation and intensity of this style and breathing should be observed.
vocalyoga.com I practice Bikram (ie., hot) yoga. I also sing in a community choir here in Salt Lake City.
