Meet another member of our Retreat faculty, Dr. Kayla Freeman! Last year we added faculty-led warm-ups each day, which was a wonderful way for our attendees to ensure their bodies are well prepared for a full day of dancing. We’re so excited to continue this tradition with this year, bringing her vast knowledge of strength and conditioning to our dancers.
Kayla is a physical therapist and Pilates instructor whose passion for movement began with dance at a young age. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Dance, a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, and comprehensive Pilates teacher certification, allowing her to blend classical Pilates principles with functional strength training to support dancers at every level.
She has worked with performers ranging from students to professionals with organizations such as the Pacific Northwest Ballet, the 5th Avenue Theatre, and numerous national Broadway tours, giving her a strong understanding of the demands placed on artistic athletes.
Kayla is passionate about helping dancers build confidence in their bodies and embrace strength and conditioning as an essential part of their training. Her teaching emphasizes efficient movement, mobility, and strength to help dancers move with greater ease and develop lasting resilience.

We love getting to bring in local teachers doing great things for the adult ballet community when we travel for Retreat, and was no exception this year!
Miriam is a School of American Ballet trained ballerina who danced professionally with . She is also a Stanford graduate, editor, mom of four, published author, and now, an incredibly popular ballet teacher at the .
Her substantial Instagram following has led to large and enthusiastic open classes at PNB, often numbering over 50 dancers of all ages and abilities. Ms. Landis has proven, over and over, that ballet is simply a voice for humanity and that is, in fact, not niche at all.
Miriam is also the author of three novels that give a behind-the-scenes look at the world of ballet from the perspectives of young dancers: Lauren in the Limelight, Girl in Motion, and Girl on Pointe.

Hi everyone, if you don’t know me (and I expect that most of you won’t) I’m Maria! I’m beyond excited to be taking labl into this next phase, and building on the incredible designs Liz has been perfecting since the early days on Etsy.
I grew up in the ballet world, and have worked in the dance world for my entire career now. Over the years, I have personally gone through so many changes in my relationship to dance. What I’ve come to realize is that 1) dance, in whatever form I can practice, always makes me feel like myself again, and 2) there is something undeniably special about being around dancers. We connect on a different level, even when the conversation or the setting isn’t around dance.
The past four years, working with Kathryn Morgan and building the KM & Friends events (🪦) truly changed me and what I believed about the ways that dance can fit into our lives. I believe so strongly that we need places to be in progress, to be continuous students, to be messy, which is why bringing the Retreat experience to labl this summer is so important to me. We need spaces and ways where we can come back to dance – back to ourselves — in ways that honor our humanness. Space to just BE, without the pressure of having to be perfectly formed. I hope you can join us!
I also always found myself still loving dancewear, and how dancers express themselves through fashion. I wanted to be able to be part of that world again, but as someone who’s not in a ballet studio anymore, it often felt like there wasn’t space for me. So, I’m changing it. I hope that whatever stage you’re in (or on!), you always find a home with labl active. 💖

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what it means to be a dancer. To those of us who, at some point encountered the art form and became hopelessly enchanted, DANCER is far more then a label. Its an identity. The roots run deep. While our relationship with dance may change over the years we continue to carry our passion, determination, and dedication.
I’ve noticed that as adults we can look for permission to try something new, to belong. Im here to tell you, if visions of sugar plums dance in your head, then you should DANCE!
I’ve always believed that being a dancer isn’t defined by where you perform, but by how deeply you care about the craft and the community around it, and that belief continues to guide me. I’m excited to remain connected to labl as it continues to grow, honoring dancers not just for what they do on stage, but for who they are across a lifetime. 💖

We are so excited to be bringing labl [back] to life, and in an expanded way, this year! As we’ve been in conversation over the past year (or so), it’s been clear that we want to find ways to support dancers through multiple chapters of their dance journey, and in moments that may not be inside a dance studio. Not just as dancers, but as people, humans, artists.
The leotards you know and love will absolutely be returning. We’re also building community events, like our adult Retreat happening this summer, and expanding our core offerings to include pieces that can carry you throughout your life while keeping you connected to the dance community you love.
Bear with us a bit, as Retreat is going to be prevalent here on socials over the next few weeks and we don’t want our OG fans to feel forgotten about! Clothing will take a bit to get back up and running, but we’re so excited to share what we’ve been working on with you.
