1989 through to 2013 each summer I, Tom Sewid was the Native watchman conducting informative walking tours through the ancient Kwakwaka'wakw abandoned Indian village known as Mamalilacolla, Village of the Last Potlatch. Thousands of boaters have meet me at the site walking by the fallen totem poles, well now I come out of my bush world and on Saturday January 20th I will be demonstrating traditional carving in Seattle. Come see me at Northwest Tribal Art just up from Pike Place Market. As many know, I love sharing my rich Kwakwaka'wakw legends and stories, so if you want to know about that particular piece in your collection come see me. If you are planning on journeying to my lands of the war canoe, then you may want to come and discuss what I can share with you in regards to interesting places to go visit.
While the season is coming to a close, the behind the scenes work is just warming up. There is a VA Mental Health Summit next Friday and our Veterans Sailing Group here in Eugene, Oregon has an opportunity to share the love and passion of sailing that has positively affected their lives. There will be several of us speaking on behalf of the healing and therapy that sailing can provide to veterans including the program director who has put his hole weight behind it. Thank you is not enough for this person.

We still need your support to fund our program so veterans can continue to race for the next 2 years. Would you donate at the link below and/ or spread our cause?

I am so grateful this has taken off and to be able to share with all of you in our community.

Thank you!!!

Beautiful August like afternoon for survey of a 2013 Beneteau 31!

Took a spin on the new J/9 from @jboats yesterday afternoon and guess what? It sails like a J Boat! Beautiful balance on the helm and a keep-it-simple sailplan, plus a cockpit big enough to pile full of friends. Only thing missing were the drink holders. Want one? Well, get in line: 1.5 years, we're told, is the current wait. Full demo-sail vid coming soon.

The new J/9 Sea-Trialed and turned out in true J/Boat fashion. #4 will be in the PNW shortly and #12 is on order and available for purchase.

From J Boats:

The new J/9 (28 ft) daysailer was recently launched and has just completed her initial sea-trials on Narragansett Bay.

It was a fun week on Narragansett Bay as the new J/9 daysailer completed her commissioning and testing of the environmentally-friendly Torqeedo electric pod drive. After a quick, easy rig tune on the single-spreader
rig, the sails were fitted and it was time for J/9's first sail.

With the J/Design father-son team of Rodney and Alan Johnstone aboard, the J/9 took off on her initial test sail and delivery from Barrington down to Bristol, RI. The electric pod-drive with folding propeller worked beautifully, pushing the easily-driven hull up to 6.5 kts.

Next was the double-checking how the sails fitted on the rig and trimmed out properly. In short, all the pieces seemed to fit perfectly into place, the main and jib trimming out nicely. In around 8 to 10 kts of wind the J/9 quickly reached 7.5 kts reaching speeds and she sailed upwind with beautiful balance on the helm. The J/9 is a very close-winded boat, tacking through 77 degrees with ease and fetching upwards of 6.5 knots boatspeed.

Upon reaching shore, it was all smiles from Al and Rod...both pleased with the latest creation from the J/Design drawing boards. Commented Al, "she's just what we hoped for, quick and comfortable!" The cockpit is huge and about as comfortable as your living room sofa with the thick, soft cockpit cushions.

On Friday, the new J/9 had its first long-distance test and delivery sail from Bristol Harbor to Newport Harbor- a distance of 16.1 nm in 3.0 hours flat! Upwind in 10 to 20 kts south-southeast breeze sailing down Narragansett Bay and underneath the magnificent Newport Bridge. The VMG speed of 5.4 kts against a 0.5 to 1.0 kts flooding tide is pretty remarkable performance, tacking through about 77 degrees.

Here is a link to the 3D track of that delivery on

Future and current boat owners. Stop the doubling of tax by on your boat

URGENT message to Washington boaters!

Earlier this week, we learned of a proposal (SB 5483) from the State Senate Transportation Committee to DOUBLE the Watercraft Excise tax. This is the tax Washington boaters pay annually when they register their boats. Presently, it’s calculated as .5% of the value of the vessel and would increase to 1.0%.

Boaters are currently the only users of the state’s roadways, waterways, and air space that pay a percentage-based excise tax to the state. Cars do not pay this tax to the state anymore, and neither do motor homes, planes, or helicopters. Doubling a tax on the only user group already paying an excise tax to the state is unfair and inappropriate.

We have set up a simple VoterVoice for you to let your state legislators know you do not support this increase. It only takes one minute! Click the link below now to send a message to your state senators and representatives.

Thank you Bob! 03/25/2021

J/Boats, Newport, RI

Ever wonder how a boat is created from an idea to reality? Here are some progress photos of the new J/9 daysailer.

The quick lesson is that once the designer has created the hull and deck lines for the boat, it's sent to our Symmetrix tool maker in Bristol, RI to make the male "plugs".

Step 1- make the frames and spray coat with what looks like wedding cake white icing (a foam).

Step 2- the 5-axis milling machine "carves" out the shape of the plug.

Step 3- coat the mold with an epoxy/ fiber mix (the gray stuff).

Step 4- the 5-axis milling process carves the mold to within 1mm of the designed shape.

Step 5- mold is "long-boarded" manually for smoothness.

Step 6- final thin coating (black) of mold release epoxy is sprayed and hand-sanded and buffed to a brilliant, smooth shine!

Step 7- apply mold release, then cover the plug in multiple layers of glass to create the female "mold". Add several cross frames and longtitudinal supports (mostly steel tubing). Flip it all over, pull the plug out of the mold! Now, we're ready to make boats!

Sounds easy, right? Not! But, it's much faster and more accurate today than it was back in "the old days" of wooden frames and strip-planking and hand-sanding everything!
