In 1959, Louis Rabouin, then a second-degree black belt (“Ni dan”) in Shotokan Karate, founded the American Self-Defense Karate Association (ASDKA) on Rising Sun Avenue, the first Japanese karate school in Philadelphia and the first Shotokan school on the east coast of the U.S. A year later, he moved the dojo to a larger space on Chelten Avenue in the city’s Germantown section, and re-named it the

Great classes Saturday.
1. Praachi with new Brown belt and certificate.
2. Working on structure of stances: Palm heel strikes to focus mitts.
3. Randori (evading multiple attackers)
4. and 5. Adults -- not weapon defense, but a distancing drill learned from Rory Miller. http://chirontraining.com/
6. Adults group after class. (With a couple pre-adults :-] )

Finishing Thursday class with flying kicks.

Wednesday group...after class.

Last classes of 2022......
* Group shot after Children's class -- guess who turned 16 today?
* Working the "Stations" during Adults class -- a favorite on Saturday for cardio!

It's been a fine year for Shuto Karate Sellersville, by God's grace. Many thanks to all my students and parents who made it so! Our Adults class has become very active and we're doing a lot of cool stuff. I am blessed to have a group of some very dedicated members, children and adults, whose commitment leads to fast progress in skill and rank and the most enjoyable teaching for me.
We practice traditional J*panese Shotokan karate, but also do many other things to make a more rounded martial artist.
Here is a partial list of the things I want to emphasize in our classes in 2023. This in addition to the normal “3 K’s” of J*panese karate training: Kihon (basic techniques/combos), Kumite (sparring), and Kata (forms).
Falling/takedowns
Self-defense from the ground
Gripping (standing and grappling) (Adults)
Kata bunkai (practical application of kata) (Adults)
Bag & pad training (hitting)
Flow drills and other fighting drills (Adults)
Randori (evading multiple attackers)
Escrima - sticks and empty hand (Adults)
Structure (of karate stances and techniques)
Training for more speed (Children)
Defending against being pushed
Flying side kicks! (Children)
It’s an ambitious list, but "ganbarimasu"! -- I’ll give it my best!
HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone! Enjoy the photo retrospective -- we did a whole lot this year, so there's a bunch of them......

My Wednesday night (flying) sidekicks!

Monday's Adults class with some new belts and promotion certificates from Saturday's exam.

Test day today. We tested for Yellow belts all the way to a Brown belt. More to come...

More photos from Sunday's tournament.

Children's class on Monday and some stills from Sunday's tournament. Congratulations, Jon -- 1st place in sparring and kata!
Proud of everyone's performances 👊👍.
A warmup exercise with the belts in Saturday's children's class.
A Saturday class favorite (?) -- "Stations"!

After Adults class on Monday.
Eskrima randori -- more fun with sticks. Many thanks to Emilie for recording.
Monday training -- drills with Escrima sticks.
Monday training, an exercise from Iain Abernethy's "Training Matrix" (https://youtu.be/NuwL8mw1QHw) -- beating up on a focus mitt. :-]

Some outtakes from last night. Good class turnouts!

"Defending yourself from the ground" in Saturday's Children's class.

RGF breaks the red board.

Learning the flying side kick in yesterday's Open class.

After Adults' Class tonight.

Congratulations to Josh, who tested for his adult-level black belt ("sho dan") on 9/24 and was awarded it on Thursday! Josh has been training faithfully with our club since he was 6 -- more than 11 years. Well-deserved!

Wednesday action.
This is the side snap kick (J*p: "yoko geri ke-age"). As far as I know, it's unique to the Shotokan style of karate. (I could be wrong.)
Praachi demonstrates it perfectly here during her exam yesterday.

Some jumping and rolling at the end of class on Saturday morning. Who's who in these blurry action shots?
Josh leads the Adults class members, some of whom just learned it, in the kata called Heian Shodan.

Our children are very athletic!

Happy Birthday Praachi! (tomorrow)

Good classes tonight. Children in the front pictured in pairs for mentoring. Testing begins this week.
For Adults, Monday is Escrima night!
Escrima stick practice on Monday night.

Saturday: Briefly defying gravity, some of us more so, some less 😏 ....
Name that kata!
Our reigning Limbo champ and her unorthodox style. This was determined to be in violation of official Limbo rules 📜, made up on the spot, but she went on to win anyway.👏
Classes are sometimes small as summer winds down, so we take a break to showcase some of the many talents of our students in addition to karate!

First Escrima session with our new sticks. Very pleased with the 28-inch rattan sticks I purchased from https://www.kalieskrima.com/ and with their quick response, after my normal supplier had been unable to restock the ones I needed.

Good turnout for both classes today. In Children's class, kata practice included mentoring and peer critique.
Here's Praachi doing the kata "Bassai Dai" (BD), a brown belt-level form.
Shotokan has two kata, or forms, called "Bassai": "Dai" (greater) and "Sho" (lesser). Thus, BD is the "greater" Bassai kata.
There are various translations for the pair of Kanji (Chinese characters) that make up "Bassai." In the "old days" we were told that it means "breaking into a fortress." However, another interpretation says that you're *extracting* someone held prisoner there; thus, you're breaking OUT of the fortress. But anyway....
I taught this kata to Praachi completely *over Zoom* in early 2021, when she was still only a Green belt; that is, 3 levels below Brown belt.
Imagine the dedication and mental focus required to learn a complicated form like that remotely, and practicing only in your home, by yourself.
Second week of our stick-fighting (Escrima) class. Curt explaining the position and possible uses of the free hand in one-stick techniques. It can be used for blocking, grabbing, or striking -- and holding it near your chest keeps it out of the way so you don't hit your own arm or knuckles with your stick!
This training is a great complement to our empty-hand (karate) practice.

That kid Roman showed up again at the dojo and ate our pizza. At least he pushed a broom beforehand. And he brought his friend, Fermando.
Club History
In 1959, Louis Rabouin, then a second-degree black belt (“Ni dan”) in Shotokan Karate, founded the American Self-Defense Karate Association (ASDKA) on Rising Sun Avenue, the first Japanese karate school in Philadelphia and the first Shotokan school on the east coast of the U.S. A year later, he moved the dojo to a larger space on Chelten Avenue in the city’s Germantown section, and re-named it the Shuto Karate Club. From that time, the school, through many relocations, has been continuously active.
Presently, the head of both the ASDKA and the Shuto club is Master Lawrence Flournoy (8th dan), who also runs the Shuto club’s main branch (near Skippack). Master Robert Trotta (7th dan) has recently opened the newest Shuto branch in Kutztown, while continuing to run the Sellersville branch of the club in conjunction with Sensei Michael Lapreziosa (3rd dan).
