We had 21 kids show up for our first SAFETY training last night. If you missed it, we have another one starting at 10:00 am this Saturday morning at the Extension Office. This will likely be the last training until February. You don't want to miss out on all the fun. This is going to be the best year ever. #Targetontate, #Tatecounty4-H
4h district shoot
Today was our last practice on the shotgun range before next week’s County Shoot. We had 6 perfect scores of 15, 4 of 14, and a rash of 12 and 13 scores. This is the first time I know of that we have had more than one perfect score in one practice. Our kids are ready. I’m so incredibly proud of these young men and women.😎👍🏻 All that said, these kids have to start wearing old caps as we only got to shoot one today. 😒 ....and, ....and as a bonus we had a chance to start setting the shotgun hook on two new young ladies today. Great day on the range! Target on Tate
Did anyone in archery see or pick up a bow and arrow in a camo case today?
Are we shooting today?
Would someone affiliated with target on tate please give me a call. I'm wanting some info before we show up to the safety class tonight. 901-262-3834

[04/26/20]   Here’s a great refresher on safety rules.

4 UNIVERSAL FIREARMS SAFETY RULES AND THEIR IMPORTANCE
by Scott Gara

When it comes to firearms safety there are four universal safety rules crucial to follow. These rules ensure no one is injured — or worse — due to a negligent discharge. If you’re new to firearms, the National Shooting Sports Foundation recommends committing the following rules to memory:

1. Always point a firearm in a safe direction.

2. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

3. Treat every gun as if it were loaded. Keep it unloaded until you’re ready to use it.

4. Know your target and what’s around it, including beyond it.

Hang around gun people enough and you’ll hear different variations of these basic rules but, rest assured, they all mean the same thing. For example, a classic twist on rule one is “Never point your firearm at something you’re not willing to destroy.” It’s a bit more poignant for those who need help painting a mental picture.

THE 10 C0MMANDMENTS OF GUN SAFETY
In addition to the above four universal safety rules, the NSSF offers up six additional rules to follow making up what they call the 10 Commandments of Gun Safety:

5. Use correct ammunition.

6. If the gun fails to fire, keep it pointed in a safe direction. Unload it, then inspect it.

7. Always wear eye and ear protection on the range.

8. Before shooting, ensure the barrel is clear of obstructions. Never look down the muzzle end of a firearm.

9. Don’t alter or modify your firearm and have it serviced frequently.

10. Learn the mechanical and handling characteristics of your firearm.

All 4-H activities, meetings, etc. remained cancelled through at least May 10th. It was also announced yesterday that this years 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships have been cancelled as well. We will post any new updates as they become available.
Meanwhile, we thought you would enjoy this live feed from the ranges:

All 4-H activities, meetings, etc. have been cancelled through *May 10th*.
See below for more information.

Edited—Please note this date has been changed to May 10.

An update about Extension operations: All in-person local, regional, and state-level Extension-sponsored meetings and events have been postponed until March 30. We will still be conducting normal business hours at all our locations. This includes the Bost Extension Center on campus, our four regional Research & Extension Centers, and our 82 county Extension offices.

Also, MSU students that need internet accessibility between March 23 and April 30 can come to our County Extension Offices and Research and Extension Centers. This applies during normal business hours at all our locations. The responsibilities Extension personnel will have in these cases is to check student IDs, direct them to the workspace set aside for this purpose, ensure each workspace has a separation of at least 6 feet between users, and have the work area cleaned after use.

You can locate any of our locations here: http://extension.msstate.edu/county-offices

You can learn the facts about coronavirus here: http://extension.msstate.edu/food-and-health/health/coronavirus

We appreciate your understanding during this time. We are continuously monitoring this situation, and we will communicate any updates to you as conditions change.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us and we will do our best to answer them. Thank you! #MSUext

It was a beautiful morning on the range earlier today. The archery range was busy with quite a bit of friendly competition going on. The shotgun group put up some really nice numbers and we had our first perfect 15 of the year. Keeping with tradition we shot his cap. Congrats to Big Jake on his accomplishment.

How the Shotgun Sports Changed My Life

👇This is why we do what we do:

womensoutdoornews.com It was April of 2016. I was a shy, 13-year old who was extremely insecure, and my self-confidence was basically non-existent. I can remember seeing the confident girls and women playing softball saying, “Come with us, Makayla, you’ll have fun.” And every time I went with them, I was so scared ...

[01/03/20]   Due to extremely wet and muddy conditions at the range, the practice scheduled for tomorrow (01/04/20) has been cancelled.
Next practice is Saturday January 25th. Stay tuned for more information about this practice date.
