Donkey Dental Care: Healthy Teeth for a Healthy Life

Donkeys evolved in the desert, where they grazed on coarse, abrasive forage that naturally wore their teeth down. Because of this, donkeys have hypsodont teeth, meaning their teeth continue to erupt and grow throughout their entire lives.

Like horses, donkeys develop sharp enamel points that require routine dental floating by a qualified veterinarian. Regular dental examinations are an essential part of preventive healthcare and can help avoid painful conditions before they become serious.

One common problem is gingivitis, which occurs when hay and feed become packed between the teeth and gums. If left untreated, this can lead to infection, pain, and in severe cases, surgery may be necessary.

Sadly, dental disease can contribute to colic, one of the leading causes of premature death in donkeys. Because donkeys are naturally stoic animals, they instinctively hide pain, making it difficult to recognize a problem until it has become advanced.

Donkey Facts: Donkeys Are Visual Learners

Donkeys are visual learners and are considered one of the most intelligent animals on the planet. Their intelligence is often compared to that of many dog breeds and even dolphins. A donkey has an incredible memory and remembers both positive and negative experiences throughout its lifetime.

Because of this, every interaction with your donkey matters. Your goal should always be to create positive learning experiences that build trust and confidence. Once a donkey learns that something is safe, it is far more likely to accept it calmly in the future.

Example: Introducing a Blanket

If I am introducing a blanket to a donkey that has never worn one before, I don't place it on the donkey immediately. Instead, I wrap the blanket around my own body first and allow the donkey to see and smell it on me.

By watching me wear the blanket without fear, the donkey learns that it is not dangerous. The donkey can investigate it with its nose, see that nothing bad happens, and begin to accept the blanket with confidence rather than fear.

Remember, donkeys learn by observing, thinking, and remembering. Taking a few extra minutes to introduce something new the right way can make all the difference in building a willing, trusting partner.
