REVIEW
This client was a crib to bed transition at just barely 3 years old. We sleep professionals don’t LOVE doing them this early (some I know won’t!) but I always do my best to meet my clients where they are and work with their set of circumstances. This was one of the smoothest early transitions I’ve seen in a while!

#backtoschool Well, here we are. It’s been quite the year. Many of us have children that haven’t been in a school building in well over a year. Some of us had a few weeks of partial days. Some of us attended school last year with masks and shut downs. Whatever your circumstances please acknowledge that they are not normal and your children, resilient though they may be, they know that too.

Many of us now have children going back into the classroom full time this week (some last week and others in the weeks to come). I can not stress how important it is to start to shift that #summerschedule (err, #pandemiclife) so that your kids are sleeping an appropriate amount of time for their age and school wake time!

The easiest way to do this is to start waking your child earlier a bit each day to achieve that wake time and shift bedtime earlier by the same amount of time.

BUT shifting sleep is not the only factor. Starting to asjust your eating routine to the same (or close) routine school has for lunch and snack times helps your child’s master clock reset so that he/she is not too hungry waiting for lunch at school OR coming home irritable OR struggling to sleep because their biological functions are out of whack!

Keep it chill the few days before school and the whole first week. (Disregard the fact that my kids start two #flagfootball practices/week EACH the same week school starts. 😬)

Extra hugs, extra healthy food and extra patience. Remember that sleep is not just about what happens at night. There is a whole day that leads up to it!

Crying. It is one of the biggest controversies around sleep work. I am not in the business of making babies (or children) cry...but crying is a biological signal and it happens. Not all crying is the same. It is my preference when working with clients to support the tears. This doesn’t always mean preventing them but when we appropriately identify, address and support them, we see success without stress.

Happy Sunday. It’s my birthday today. Coffee ✔️ and it is well documented that napping is my 2nd favorite activity (eating being #1) so that is on the agenda!

Momma, take the nap. Model for your children that sleep is just as important as eating healthy and exercising. We might not be successful at prioritizing rest and sleep every day, just like we aren’t always successful at choosing the right foods and getting that work out in and that’s OK! Sometimes I choose a nap over a work out because I can’t manage both. Sleep is a healing process...physically and mentally, prioritize it for your family.

If you need help with sleep in your family DM me your questions and concerns and let’s see how I can help!

SLEEP WORK READINESS. There are some general beliefs about what makes a baby ready for sleep work to which I do not necessarily subscribe. To be clear, "sleep work" does not automatically equate to "sleep training". Only when absolutely necessary do we implement gradual and gentle behavioral work. When I talk about sleep work it includes routine setting (notice I did not say "schedule") adjusting for sleep foundations, working on sleep science and MOST important, parent education. The rule of thumb from most pediatricians is, 4 months or once they hit a certain weight. While this is a starting point, it is hardly the full measure of whether or not a baby (or their parents) are truly ready for sleep work.

I personally do not work with babies under 5 months old, other than parent education and gradual routine setting. *Infant Sleep Education* While some babies are ready as early as 4 months, I find that most are not quite developmentally ready and more over, there are often still too many boundaries to successful sleep work still present. So what DO I look for when looking for sleep work readiness?

1. An appropriate age. Is your baby at least 5 months, the age where we can more confidently know that sleep is organizing neurologically and biologically?

2. An appropriate developmental stage. Is a big leap on the horizon? This may not be the BEST time to start working on sleep because we are facing a very natural and very normal boundary to sleep. Best to wait until the leap is over.

3. Parental readiness. Are parents committed to implementing routine adjustments? Are their sleep goals appropriate and realistic? Are there strong sleep associations that we need to address and are parents willing to acknowledge this?

4. External circumstances. Is there going to be any big change or event that could create a set back in the near future? Is a vacation on the horizon? A big life change like a new sibling, a new nanny, pre school, day care? Best to wait until after any major adjustments.
