Flag Is Up Farms is the internationally renowned starting point for some of the world’s most successful performance horses and highest earning racehorses. It is also the home of the Monty Roberts International Learning Center and equine celebrity Shy Boy. Flag is up farms & Monty and Pat Roberts, with their team of exceptional trainers have used force-free, Join-Up® training methods to start horses on their way to happy, healthy, and successful careers in a variety of disciplines and applications. Remedial horses have found an environment among the team at Flag Is Up Farms that fosters a safe haven to mend troubling behaviors and get back on track for success. Flag Is Up Farms’ notoriety as home to “the Man Who Listens to Horses,” Monty Roberts, has also created a demand to open the farm to the public. In the strength of a mustang, the watchful eye, the instinct to protect their freedom, and the quiet moments when curiosity begins to replace uncertainty, we are reminded of just how extraordinary these animals are.

We’ve welcomed new BLM mustangs to California Horse Center, where they are beginning their next chapter alongside members of the Monty Roberts team—students and certified instructors alike.

Each interaction is an opportunity to observe, listen, and learn. Through patience, understanding, and thoughtful communication, our team is working to build trust while honoring each horse as an individual.

These mustangs have so much to teach us—not just about horses, but about the importance of meeting another being where they are.

At CHC, we believe the horse is always the teacher. And every new relationship is an opportunity to become a better student.

There’s something special about the community that grows around horses.

It’s the conversations between rides, the extra set of hands when you need them, sharing what you’ve learned, cheering someone on, and knowing there’s always someone at the barn who understands why you came in “just to check on your horse” and stayed for three hours.

Different horses. Different journeys. Different riders.

But a shared love for the horse brings us together.

That’s what makes a barn feel like more than a place to keep your horse. It becomes a community.

There is something extraordinary about a horse.

Their strength, their beauty, their spirit—and the quiet trust they place in us.

Caring for them means more than admiring them. It means paying attention to the little things: good nutrition, movement, turnout, grooming, veterinary and farrier care, a safe environment, and simply giving them the time and space to be horses.

A happy, healthy horse is a beautiful thing to see.
