:) PLEASE ANSWER !!!!! :) (I've tried calling and calling to no avail, I'm figuring b/c of change of ownership): What is the rate ($$) for a one-hour PRIVATE jumping lesson?! I am an intermediate/advanced rider, I've trained with riders like Joe Fargis, and Greg Best. Also, do you offer anything longer than an hour? Website offers 0 information on these critical topics. Thanks! :D
Congratulations Kelly! Best wishes to you & Chris for great joy & success as the new owners of Shallowbrook .

PETA is a Bully

I didn't know! (I owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Larry Bramlage and Euki Binns for their help in validating research and statistical information for this article, and to @JennyPhoto for the supporting pictures.) I can no longer remain silent about my love for horses and for horse racing for fear of backlash from P...

Four Stallions, Including The Lieutenant, Killed in Peru

Absolutely disgusting! Four stallions at Haras Barlovento in Canete, Peru were killed by intruders Sunday, who apparently broke into the farm with the express purpose of killing The Lieutenant (Street Sense), Cyrus Alexander (Medaglia d’Oro), Timely Advice (A.P. Indy) and Kung Fu Mambo (Arg) (Giant’s Causeway), the fa...

On Saturday November 23rd the Polo world suddenly lost one of it's biggest supporters, David Wenning. I first met David and his family when they came to ride at Shallowbrook. His kids, Mike and Kristen gravitated towards the Shallowbrook Interscholastic Polo team coached by my Dad, Hal Vita. The love of this sport touched every member of his family including his wife Sue; cheering on the sidelines at every practice, game or clinic and checking on the horses. This sport truly touched each member of the family. To say he was dedicated to this sport is an understatement. Even after his kids had gone onto college he was then part of the Intercollegiate Polo Assoc as well. As my parents got on in age David and Sue would drive them to the away polo games so my Dad could coach the team. They took care of my parents as though they were their own. In and out of the Polo world David was a kind, caring, exceptional, loving father, husband and friend. We were truly blessed to have David in our lives and so involved in this sport of which he loved.
We will miss you David, say Hi to my Mom and Dad. He sacrificed immensely and unselfishly for the good of the sport, the horses and student athletes.

Secretariat’s Meadow – The Land, The Family, The Legend

In light of a recent op-ed published in the Alabama Political Reporter referencing Secretariat, the family of Penny Chenery has asked us to post their response to the paper. The following was penned by John Tweedy:

Recently, your paper published an op-ed that equated the Republican political campaign of 2020 with “unleashing Secretariat.” We, the children of the late Penny Chenery, Secretariat’s owner, remind readers that Secretariat was a horse, not a politician.

Those who invoke his name should remember his life and times. When Secretariat burst onto the cultural scene in 1973, our nation was caught up in a moment not unlike today. The congressional Watergate hearings were in full swing, and the impeachment of President Nixon appeared likely. The war in Vietnam neared its ignominious end. Public confidence in our institutions of government had sagged to a desperate low.

Secretariat became a national hero not because he was the property of one political party or the other, but because his victories transcended all human frailties, and uplifted Americans to a plane of shared exhilaration. Our mother technically “owned” him, but no human could truly claim credit for his achievements. In that sense, he shed his nobility on everyone. His red coat blended with the blue and white jockey silks to form an organic, almost accidental expression of the American spirit.

We will therefore respectfully object to any effort, by anyone, to appropriate Secretariat for any partisan purposes of left or right at this time of agonizing division. Back at a time when America was every bit as divided as it is now, Secretariat was a hero for everyone. As long as we are the guardians of his legacy, he will remain that way.

[04/22/19]   The prize list for the 5/a baker products charity horse show is now online at

One more post for 2018. We are honored to be able to present the Hartford area Habitat for Humanity with a check from the Shallowbrook Charity Horse Show. We look forward to having them as our charity again next year. The horse show will now go under another name, The 5/a Baker Products Charity Horse Show, same date and same place as last year. In the picture left to right, Geoff and Sally Allison, Karraine Moody, Executive Director and Matt Boyle, Restore Director.
Wishing you all a Happy, Healthy and Safe New Year.

[06/19/18]   We truly appreciate this feedback on the Shallowbrook Charity Horse Show.
A heartfelt thank you to Nick Sanimarco.

Hi Mr. Allison,

I just want to thank you for the very best horse show we ever went to, the ShallowBrook Charity Horse Show in Somers, CT. I happened to see your show on about a month or so ago, and since it was listed as a USEF National A rated show we submitted our entry to give our daughter a chance to accumulate points for her division, but also because it was for a very worthy charitable cause, the Habitat for Humanity. We came all the way from Nassau County, Long Island, but the 3.5 hour trip was well worth it, and we were so pleased with your show.

The venue was great-a country setting in a small town neighborhood of Somers, north of Hartford, Connecticut, which gave us the feeling that we were in a very special place with no pressure like you have at all the other National A Rated Horse Shows that are so commercially and profit motivated. Equally important, the footing in the ring we showed in was pristine, and everyone running the show was so nice to us and everyone else that attended, including the Show Secretary, Beverly Thomas, the gate keepers, groundskeepers and other staff. And your show is so affordable in comparison to other National A rated shows like HITS on the Hudson, Hampton Classic, and others that we previously went to in New Jersey. Even the concession service you had at the show was very affordable. And the hay you provided for my pony was the best quality he has had since we got him three years ago. He loved it so much he ate a whole bale, every blade, in less than 2 days. We would definitely come back again. My only regret is that we have to wait a whole year to return. And the Enchanted Fairy Garden was one of the most unique and beautiful creations on the show grounds. Our hats off to the designer who put this masterpiece together. This is a MUST Horse show to enter into for equestrians at all skill levels. I would highly recommend this show to anyone, whether you are from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, or anywhere else in the USA. You will not be disappointed. Move over HITS, Hampton Classic and other National A Rated Shows, you have some competition to deal with!!!! Thank you so much Mr. Allison!!

The NEW venue for the horse show is the Union Agricultural Society, 56 Egypt Rd. Somers, CT.

The Charity this year is the Hartford Area Habitat for Humanity. We look forward to seeing you there and apologize for any confusion.

Such a happy day, such a sad day. It's been an honor and privilege to train this young lady and her two ponies, Dreamworks and Blackjack. Sam has been with me for 5 years, starting with her feet just below the saddle flap. While she had bumps in the road (like all riders) she worked hard and put them behind her. Sam's hardwork lead her to many year-end Championships. In the past 2 years it has been a delight as I saw everything come together. I wish Sam and all her future mounts continued success (I know she'll have) as she goes through her riding career. As for her parents, Cheryl Hansen and Steven Hansen, their a trainer's dream

A bit late!!! Samantha and Blackjack produced some beautiful rides at the Eastern States Horse Show. These two have really come together this year, so proud of them

[09/18/17]   This Saturday, September 23rd we are having our CHSA and CHJA rated horse show. We will offer our reduced rates at this show as well. Entries close Fri noon. Look forward to seeing you all.

Woodstock 2017, what a weekend. Sam and Blackjack championship and a Reserve. Kristina and Abercrombie Champion. Jackie and Sweet n' Salty Champion. Jordan and Sweet n' Salty Res. Champion. Kalise and Abercrombie were fantastic, great ribbons in super large classes and first time for cantering the whole course. Lila and Abercrombie great ribbons in Leadline with some interesting tests, first away show for her. We are so proud of all the girls. The classes were huge....30 in some of them. The horses were exceptional. Our experiences with camping...interesting. 🙂 Memories were made that will last a lifetime

[09/06/17]   After 55 years, SHALLOWBROOK will be passing the reins to a new owner. Shallowbrook Equestrian Center is under contract to be sold to Chris and Kelly Haluch, of Hampden Mass.

Shallowbrook will continue as it has for so many years, teaching children, teenagers and adults to ride.

In 1962 Hal Vita Sr. and his wife Frankie had a vision which over the years has become a starting point for so many Hunt Seat Champions, future stable owners, riders and National Polo Champions.

This is bittersweet; Shallowbrook was the home base of our family and generations to come. It is where we met our husbands and wives, the grandchildren grew up and rode as well as the great grandchildren.

Those years of family and friends helped make it what it is today, and we all will look back and smile as we think about those wonderful days.

Thank you to all who walked through the stable doors and helped make such wonderful memories throughout the years.
