In my experiences over the years championing safety at multiple companies both big and small, the phrase “real quick” sends a chill down my spine. I’ve had to make calls I never wanted to make, witness injuries, illness, and financially devastating situations that all started with the words “we just needed to do this really quick, in and out”. Remember the story of the tortoise and the hair, slow and steady wins the race. Put safety first, and it will get you to the finish line quicker and more efficient. Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.

With the winter weather coming up, it’s imperative to keep slips, trips, and falls at the forefront of our minds. It’s easy to move around thinking about the next task, but that’s when icy or slippery conditions catch us off guard. For those first responders to snow and for those starting the week in these conditions, meet with your teams first thing. Put it on their radar, choose the right footwear, constantly evaluate surfaces, keep it a priority. Stay sturdy, stay safe. Look down, but also up: “My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; He who watches over you will not slumber.” Psalms 121:1-3.
