Hi ALL, have been gone for a bit. 4 days in Great Falls, Montana, running 3 dogs in a field trial. They each did well, and each won an award. They performed beautifully. Thanks.

I was called to testify in a jury trial as an Expert Witness. The trial was held in the historic Court House in Pasco WA. What a beautiful old building.

Heath's Haven

The last of our "Spring New Arrivals" came to Heath's Haven Rescue just over a week ago! Yes...I am that far behind on posts! EEK! This post is a bit long winded...but has some cool information in it! We have learned so much from her already!

Everyone meet Axel! Axel has been on our waiting list since the beginning of February and here is a little history on her from the kind woman that stepped up to help her, when her owner no longer could:

"Hello,
I am a rehabilitation vet from Fort Collins, Colorado. I have been working with "Axel", a 5 year old, FS pointer for 1&1/2 years. She suffered a spinal cord injury and came to us paralyzed in the hind limbs. We have been working with her extensively, but we can't seem to help her make the transition to fully walking on her own. She can take a few steps on her own, but then drags. She does great in her cart and is able to drag herself efficiently when she needs to. She needs her bladder to be expressed 2-3 times a day and the skin on her feet needs to be tended to daily. She is easy to express and is used to this.

Her owner is no longer able to care for her and was going to euthanize her, so our team of rehab vets has stepped in to try and find Axel a home. Currently Axel is staying at a medical boarding facility that is run out of a home. She is doing great there, loves the other dogs and all of the exercise.

The good news is that Axel has a great spirit. She is very sweet and loves to play with other dogs. She is easy to work with as well. We only have about 2 more weeks of money to keep her in this medical boarding home. I am willing to drive her to a new home/rescue, no matter how far.

If you can offer any assistance for Axel, we would be forever grateful."

Since Axel's arrival here, we have already had her to our amazing PT veterinarian, Dr. Gilbert at Physiopaws that specializes in Canine Rehabilitation. Axel could not use her hind legs at all when she arrived and the news from Dr. Gilbert wasn't all that great, but we are all going to give her the HHR 110% that we give to all of the dogs in our rescue! She is not motivated to move her legs at all and she also has issues with her hips that are inhibiting her progress. Her right hip luxates in and out of the socket so we have to be very careful with her...fortunately she can't feel it due to her spinal injury, and it's bone on bone conctact when it is in the socket. So we will try to stengthen the surrounding muscles and tendons around her hips with hydrotherapy...and she is a professional! She did hydrotherapy prior to coming here so she gets right in and starts doing her own laps! A Femoral Head Osteotomy could be an option for Axel, but if she can't feel or use her hind legs even when the procedure is completed...is it worth putting her through that procedure?

Another issue we are being faced with is, she could become a spinal walker like Lt. Dan and Zoom, but her reflexive responses are getting cut off by her body's response to a possible painful stimulation and the communication is not getting through. So basically her body is telling her reflexes, don't do that it's painful, even though she can't feel it. Crazy right?! We learn new stuff all the time and it's really cool!

On top of that she is very thin and has lost a lot of muscle mass in the past 7 weeks, which also decreases the muscle nerve fibers (basically at the base of her tail on her hips) that need to communicate to the appropriate parts of her legs. Dogs with neurogenic muscle atrophy like this very rarely gain muscle back, but we need to get her covered up with some fat! Asap!

And now bring on the next issue...she has had diarrhea almost consistently since she has been here. First it was the stress of traveling from Colorado to Idaho, then there was the food change to a more nutrient dense diet, and just when we are so close and have a solid poop...BAM!...diarrhea again...we should be experts by now on this subject especially with dealing with Eddie and Kinsley! lol! OK, In all seriousness, guess what we believe the culprit to be?! DEER POOP! The dogs won't stay away from it! So now, we have 3 incontinent dogs that have to be leashed and watched like hawks while we are out on the property! lol!

Other than all that, Axel is a really sweet girl! She is independent, smart, and kind of a loner, but she is still getting used to the routines around here! We will have plenty of updates to come and can't wait for her to come out of her shell!

Ranger wasn't quite feeling it...probably tuckered out from chasing Goose...but he still did great and look at him move those hind legs individually!
