For the last few months, I've had the pleasure of training Romina in preparation for the 7th IFK World Championship which will be held in Leipzig, Germany.

If I had to describe her in a word, I would say that she is Strong. Leaving Switzerland to practice another language, seeking a new group to train with, and keeping a goal in sight are not easy tasks for anyone, let alone a girl her age. I did not give her an easy training regimen. I've seen many adults complain, skip days, and give up leading up to a tournament. She gave everything she had and finished each and every session strong. Her work ethic and attitude never ceases to amaze me.

Romina, we wish you safe travels to Leipzig! Good luck! Do your best! Have fun!

We will be taking a break to spend time with friends and family during the upcoming holidays.

There is a lot to look forward to. After we welcome the new year, we will have Rank Promotion Testing. Following promotion, for those that are able and interested, we will focus on the upcoming American Cup tournament. 👊

Thank you and happy holidays!

This is a reminder that there will not be classes on August 31st or September 7th. I will be out of town, but don't let that stop you from training 👊

One of the participants in yesterday's park session was wearing a shirt from an action anime, and I couldn't help but think about the impact that karate, specifically full-contact, Kyokushin karate, had and continues to have on pop culture.

There are numerous characters, shows, movies, anime, manga, video games, and more that are inspired by Mas Oyama, his students, and the karate he taught. There are familiar main characters, such as Ryu from Street Fighter and Jin Kazama from Tekken. There are supporting characters, such as Doppo Orochi from the Baki series, Gun Park from Lookism, and even Zushi from Hunter×Hunter. The list goes on.

The manga/anime series which is often credited to the growth of Karate in Japan, and ultimately the world, in the 1970s was Karate Baka Ichidai, marketed outside of Japan as Karate Master. You can watch the entire 1973 anime on YouTube and other services like Hulu, when it is in rotation.

If you would like to learn more about the history of Kyokushin, Karate Baka Ichidai, kickboxing, or perhaps how a karate master found himself on the set of a blockbuster horror film, and more, I suggest checking out the official World Oyama Karate Organization YouTube channel. Founder and Director Soshi-Saiko Shihan Yasuhiko Oyama has been sharing his journey in an ongoing series of interviews. It is both entertaining and insightful, whether you are a martial artist or not.

If you would like to talk about and learn the karate that continues to inspire many, feel free to reach out.

Join the World Oyama Karate Park Club!

Starting Saturday, June 8th, we will be having FREE Adult Training Sessions in FOREST PARK every Saturday at 10 AM, weather permitting.

Please contact me to find out where in Forest Park we will be meeting or if you have any questions. I will post if any sessions have to be canceled or postponed due to weather, etc.

Wear comfortable workout attire which allows you to stretch, punch, and kick. Don't forget to bring a bottle and stay hydrated.

These sessions will focus on Conditioning and Basic Movements. No Experience is required.

Why are these sessions FREE?
There are many reasons why people express interest in martial arts training. Some might want to get into shape. Some might want to learn to fight and defend themselves. Others might want to learn a new art and culture. Perhaps you just want to try something new or make a change. No matter the reason, the byproducts of training are numerous. For every reason to start training, there are just as many reasons that we use not to start. If you want to try, please feel free to.

If you would like to officially join the organization, learn more, and progress through the ranks, I would be happy to discuss what that entails.

Looking forward to training with you!

This past weekend, the American Cup tournament was held in Birmingham, AL.

It is always a pleasure to see Soshi-Saiko Shihan Oyama, the visiting Shihan, Sensei, and Senpai, everyone from Honbu Dojo, as well as those who came to compete and support what we do.

Everyone who competed was fantastic! Competition is one way to challenge yourself and see progress that you might not have known otherwise. Both winning and losing are experiences that can help us grow. After seeing the most recent fruit of everyone's training, I cannot wait to see what comes next!
