Great history lesson about Missouri float trips! Thanks Ozarks Alive, TJ Wilkinson
Float tripping has been a part of Ozarks culture for generations. It became commercialized in the late 1800s — thanks to greater access to the region via the railroad — as folks wanted to float, fish and see the scenic Ozarks.
They were led by colorful guides who enhanced the experience. Those names include Bales, Barnes, Dablemont — and Jim Owen, who was one of the most well-known float trip operators.
While we still float today, this era was significantly impacted by the construction of lakes, which changed rivers' free-flowing reality.
This legacy is vast and can't be captured in one story, but I share more about this legacy in this month's Notable MO-ments episode on KSMU - Ozarks Public Radio. A link to listen to the story is in the comments. Thanks to Missouri Humanities for sponsoring this series!
