With aging, our chances of getting Alzheimer's disease goes up. One reason for this might be the way our nervous systems change over time.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Our body has two parts to the nervous system: one part that relaxes us (parasympathetic) and one that excites us (sympathetic). As we age, the relaxing part of our nervous system seems to get weaker (HRV tends to decrease), and the exciting part gets stronger (sympathetic nerve activity and stress hormones go up).⁣⁣

Breathing slowly for 10 seconds (5 in, 5 out) can help control blood pressure and heart rate and activate our parasympathetic nervous system.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In a new study in Scientific Reports, Min and colleagues tested whether we may be able to help prevent Alzheimer's disease by doing this simple breathing exercise. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
What they found was striking: For the slow breathers who practiced this 2x a day for 20 minutes over 4 weeks, Alzheimer's-related amyloid proteins decreased in blood compared to controls, where the protein actually increased. Now blood amyloid doesn't directly reflect brain amyloid levels or deposition (a major study limitation), but it is thought to be correlated.⁣⁣

Lots more research is needed before we can definitively connect this finding to AD, but as a pilot study which included both younger and older participants, it is extremely interesting that something as simple as breathwork can causally modulate AD-related biomarkers.⁣

Hello dear family and friends. I will resume yoga classes starting Tuesday March 7th. One minor change. The time for classes is 6:15 PM. This will give a bit more time to get to class if you are working.
Classes are Tuesday and Thursday 6:15 PM. Saturday 9:00 AM.
Please, let me know if you're coming to class. I would love to see you all again.
