Did you know that dyslexia can mask giftedness, and giftedness can mask dyslexia?

Some students are incredibly bright and use their strengths to compensate for their reading and spelling difficulties. Others struggle so much with reading and writing that their gifted abilities go unnoticed. These students are often referred to as twice-exceptional students (2e).

Just because a student is making good grades doesn’t mean dyslexia isn’t present. And just because a student struggles academically doesn’t mean they aren’t gifted!

This is why we have to look beyond grades and classroom performance. We need to understand the whole child!

Dyslexia and giftedness can absolutely coexist! ❤️

This quote says it all, BUT it cannot be the end of the journey for students with dyslexia. There are strategies & methods to help these students read more effectively & improve their learning experiences & outcomes. Be a teacher or parent who supports these unique readers & learners. Also, be aware that different tools, approaches & strategies may work well for some dyslexic students while other methods will work better for others. Remember that reading is a highly subjective activity, especially for neurodivergent readers & learners.

Kindergarten is NOT too early to notice reading risk.

Watch for persistent difficulty with:

🚩 Learning letter names
🚩 Remembering letter sounds
🚩 Rhyming
🚩 Blending sounds into words
🚩 Breaking words into sounds
🚩 Connecting sounds with letters
🚩 Remembering words that have been practiced repeatedly
🚩 Learning sequences or verbal information

Also pay attention to family history.

Does a parent or sibling have dyslexia?

Did Mom, Dad, Grandma or Grandpa always say they were “terrible readers” or “terrible spellers”?

A red flag isn’t a diagnosis.

But red flags are information. Acting on that information will be key!

Please don’t need to wait until third grade to start paying attention.
