As Friends of Flight 93, we welcome worldwide all who would join us in honoring the sacrifice and courage of the passengers and crew of Flight 93 by supporting the mission of the Flight 93 National Memorial.

On September 11, 2001, 40 ordinary people aboard United Airlines Flight 93 became unexpected heroes as they chose to fight back against their hijackers, ultimately causing their plane to crash in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, before reaching its target of Washington, D.C. Because of their extraordinary acts of courage, what was once a common field has now become a "Field of Honor Forever" where these 40 Heroes will be honored for generations to come at the Flight 93 National Memorial.

THAT'S A WRAP! ... It's the one day of the year that makes us all a little sad - the day our Big Savage Tunnel is closed for the season so freezing and thawing temperatures over the coming months don't damage its protective inner lining. Thank you to all who turned out to lend a hand, and thank you to Somerset County Parks and Trails Director Lindsay Baer and Allegheny Trail Alliance Director of Community Relations Doug Riegner for providing the photograph! We'll be sharing a few more over the coming days.

In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them.
In the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter, we remember them.
In the opening of buds and in the rebirth of spring, we remember them.
In the blueness of the sky and in the warmth of summer, we remember them.
In the rustling of leaves and in the beauty of autumn, we remember them.
In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them.
When we are weary and in need of strength, we remember them.
When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them.
When we have joys we yearn to share, we remember them.
So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us,
as we remember them.
- Ronald B. Gittelsohn

This excerpt, “A Litany of Remembrance” comes from a book by Sarah York, titled “Remembering Well: Rituals for Celebrating Life and Mourning Death.” Since 2001 it has been read at memorial services in honor of the passengers and crew on board Flight 93.

This week, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, by remembering one of its strongest defenders, Flight 93 passenger Alan Anthony Beaven.

A native of New Zealand, Beaven eventually found his niche in Oakland, California by legally defending the waters of the Bay Area. Alan Beaven worked tirelessly to prosecute the greatest offenders of the Clean Water Act.

On September 11, 2001, Beaven was heading back to California to work one last case before his family moved to India where he would continue to fight legal battles for environmental protection. The actions of Alan Beaven and the other passengers and crew thwarted a terrorist attack on the nation’s capital.
