The Pacifica Radio Archives salutes Dick Gregory on this edition of from the Vault. Dick Gregory, Comedian, Civil Rights activist and Humanitarian who died today August 19 at the age of 84. The challenge of creating humor out of something as bleak and tragic as racism in America, fell into the hands of a young man from Chicago with an acerbic wit and a charismatic presence. Dick Gregory, a longtime Pacifica radio personality, supporter and board member, became one of the first African American comedians to successfully deal with Race to both White and Black audiences. And he confronted Race and Class head on.

Thank you Eric Alper for profiling Pacifica's 1974 Leonard Cohen interview. Pacifica's interview is important for several reasons: 1. Pacifica Radio WBAI host Judy Collins invites Cohen to his first live performance at a WBAI benefit.. I have Judy telling the story. 2. WBAI host Kathleen Kendel asks Leonard Cohen to recite some of his earliest poems... Leonard says that he doesn't have those early book of poems on him.. Kathleen says i do... and hands him the book to read... so he reads a few early poems. 3. PBS's Blank on Blank production company created an animated short from Leonard Cohen's story on the creation of his song Sister's of Mercy. There are probably many more reasons... but check out the Eric Alper recent post of Pacifica's Leonard Cohen recording. Leonard Cohen

It's hard to believe this animated short of our rare 1966 John Coltrane interview by Blank on Blank was featured in Rolling Stone Magazine. It changed the anonymity of the Pacifica Radio Archive Collection forever. Because of this production and reviews like this, our audio is now heard in over 105 countries around the world and we have been listened by over 100,000 individuals. Our audio is on track to be listened to by over 50,000 individuals this year alone. And the number 1 listen is still Pacifica's unique recording of John Coltrane. #rollingstoneMagazine #homeofbenfongtorres #homeofhunterSThompson

The single most popular program listened in over 105 countries around the world is our very rare John Coltrane 1966 Interview. This has caught the attention of a lot of media including this article by the The Rolling Stone Magazine

Pacifica Radio has always given space to writers who often times are at the vanguard of human thought. On November 8, 1970 Pacifica Radio recorded Kurt Vonnegut guest lecturing in a New York University classroom. The wonderful Blank on Blank animated short series did a segment on Pacifica's 1971 interview with Dustin Hoffman. I thought they were going to use Pacifica's 1967 interview with Hoffman and Director Mike Nichols on the set of The Graduate, but this 1971 interview is insightful and wonderful in it's own way... Hoffman had already also shot Midnight Cowboy, survived a Weather Underground bombing in next to his New York City flat. He had a lot to say about Life and the craft of acting.... enjoy...
