Olympic Swimming Champion Dara Torres Inducted into the Jewish-American Hall of Fame In over 50 years, since its founding in 1969, the Jewish-American Hall of Fame, has never inducted a native Angeleno ― until now. The 2020 honoree is one of the greatest swimmers of all time, Dara Torres. Torres was born on April 15, 1967 in Los Angeles, and grew up in Beverly Hills. At seven, she joined the community YMCA for swimming practice; afterward, she trained at the swimming club in Culver City. At 14, Dara won the national open championship in the 50-yard freestyle. She attended the Westlake School for Girls (now Harvard-Westlake School), and competed for them through her sophomore year in high school. During Dara’s 1983–84 high school junior year, she left home to swim for the Mission Viejo Nadadores and trained for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics ― where she won a gold medal in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay. After graduating from the Westlake School in 1985, Dara Torres accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville. While still an undergraduate, Torres competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, winning bronze and silver medals in the 4 x 100m freestyle and medley competitions, respectively. Dara Torres went on to compete in the 1992, 2000, and 2008 Olympics, winning five medals in 2000, more than anyone else on her team. In 2008, the oldest–ever Olympic swimmer at age 41 (having given birth only a year earlier), won two silver medals for 100-meter medley relay and 50–meter freestyle, breaking the American freestyle record she had set at age fifteen. Over the course of her career, Dara won four gold, four silver, and four bronze medals at the Olympics and broke the American record speeds for 50–meter freestyle ten times, more than any American swimmer in any event. Among multiple Olympic medalists, Dara is in 15th place worldwide (including both men and women), in 4th place among Americans, and in 2nd place among American women. The non-profit Jewish-American Hall of Fame's plaques are on permanent exhibit at the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond, a complete set of medals issued by the Jewish-American Hall of Fame is in the collection of the Skirball Museum in Cincinnati, and its award-winning website can be enjoyed at www.amuseum.org/jahf. If you can’t get to Richmond or Cincinnati, you can bring the JAHF into your own home by acquiring a limited edition medal issued for the newest honoree, which is its only fundraising. The Dara Torres medal features a portrait by renowned San Pedro sculptor Eugene Daub; the inscription reads: “Never put an age limit on your dreams.” Bronze, silver and gold medals are available for contributions starting at $50. Leesa Harris has been named the Program Head for softball at Harvard-Westlake School.

Harris comes to Harvard-Westlake from ICEF View Park Preparatory Charter High School, where she worked as the Head Softball Coach, a college preparatory teacher, and alumni coordinator.

In five years at View Park Prep, Harris led her team to three consecutive CIF City Section Championships (2016-18). She was named the 2016 (D-IV), 2017 (D-III), and 2018 (D-II) CIF City Section Coach of the Year. In 2017-18 Harris was named the NFHS California Coach of the Year.

“I’m thrilled to join the Harvard-Westlake coaching staff,” said Harris. “It’s an honor to be a part of a school that emphasizes academic and athletic excellence. I look forward to working with our student-athletes and continuing to build a program that has a goal of competing for championships.”

Harris followed a storied high school career at Westchester High School, where she was named to the All-CIF team three times, to play NCAA Division I softball at Cal State University, Fullerton. Harris is the Titans’ record holder in fielding percentage and is ranked third in career stolen bases. She graduated CSUF as a two-time All-Big West Conference selection.

"I am extremely excited to welcome Leesa Harris to Harvard-Westlake.” said Terry Barnum, Head of Athletics. “Leesa has a tremendous softball background as a player and as a coach, and she has been a serial winner of CIF Championships. I look forward to watching her develop our athletes as people, players, and competitors within the softball program."

Harris begins work with the Harvard-Westlake softball program in November.

Michael Erush has been named the new Boys’ Soccer Program Head at Harvard-Westlake School.

Erush comes to Harvard-Westlake from Cal State University Los Angeles, where he is the assistant coach of the men’s soccer program. Erush is a member of the LA Golden Eagles coaching staff who were named the 2019 CCAA Coaching Staff of the Year following their run to the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship game.

“I am extremely excited to join the Harvard-Westlake family as Head of the Boys’ Soccer Program,” said Erush. “As a program we will make a collaborative commitment to excellence, inclusion and character building and create a positive and competitive environment for every student-athlete, both on and off the field. My ambition is that together we will elevate the Wolverines Boys’ Soccer program to the state, regional and national level of prominence and I can’t wait to get started.”

Prior to his role at Cal State LA, Erush was the Associate Head Coach at the NCAA Division I level with Loyola Marymount University where, as the recruiting coordinator, he helped LMU earn consecutive top 20 recruiting classes and win the Lions first WCC Championship.

Erush is highly involved at the State and National levels of youth soccer as a scout for the United States Youth National Team program and the Cal-South Olympic Development program. He is currently the Elite Clubs National League Director for the boys and girls programs at the LA Breakers youth soccer club, where he coached their boys’ 2002 team to the #1 ranking in the nation in 2019-20.
