So excited our documentary has finally made it to the other side of the pandemic. It is a short story about a small space on the planet devoted to some of earths smallest creations, plants and pollinator, who keep us all alive. Please join us for this free film story of how the Mayfield Monarch Waystation came to be. I hope to see you there- Peggy Doty, the Pollinator character πŸ˜‰πŸ¦‹πŸŒŽ
Good morning!
On January 17th we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. As we reflect on our communities we would like to invite everyone to visit some of your local preserves. At MacQueen Forest Preserve, 3640 Scout Rd. Kirkland, IL, we will have staff to answer questions about the preserve and a warming fire from 10am to 2pm. Remember to be respectful of each other and follow health guidelines.
With the winds today it may be a good day to stay inside. If you need a wildlife fix here is a quick video from Chief Shabbona Forest Preserve that captures some wildlife activity! This video spans from December 13th through the 22nd.
Check it out!
Checkout this young common snapping turtle taking in the world for the first time! As it emerges from the nest it heads directly to Little Rock Creek within the newly constructed wetland bank at Afton Forest Preserve.
If you have an oak tree in your yard or you have been in one of the Forest Preserves lately you may have noticed all the acorns falling to the ground. Some of these acorns are carrying passengers with them. The adult Acorn Weevil makes a hole in developing acorns and lays her eggs . The acorn weevil young feed and grow inside the developing acorn. Once the grubs are mature they chew their way out of the acorn and then complete their lifecycle in the soil. Insect eating birds and other wildlife benefit from these plump grubs.
Come out to Afton Forest Preserve on Thursday July 1st between 10am and 2pm. District staff Patrick and Damon along with Al Roloff and Carl Von Ende will be there to give you some insight on native prairie plants and the pollinators you might see using them. Pizzo Native Plant Nursery is donating some native plants so after a hike around the preserve you can take a plant home and start your own native garden!
This spring has been very busy for everyone! Crews have been working hard to restore and improve acres of prairie, wetland, savanna and woodland. You may have seen some of the crews out treating invasive plant species in an effort to increase diversity and restore some ecological balance to the native plant communities within the Forest Preserves. Flora and Fauna are also busy producing seed or young this spring! Prepared by Patrick McCrea
If you are looking for something to do this Saturday, June 5th, we will be having an event at Chief Shabbona Forest Preserve. The great folks with Northern Illinois Raptor
Rehab & Education will be bringing some raptors and will be giving a presentation at the half of every hour between 11:00 and 3:00. Also our restoration ecologist, Josh Clark, will be leading a short hike into the Chief Shabbona woods discussing the ongoing restoration of the site at the top of every hour. Sturdy boots or shoes and long pants are recommended for the hike.

There will also be historical reenactors at Watertower Park in Shabbona celebrating Shabbona Days as well as the townwide garage sales in Shabbona.

Forecast looks great so make a plan to come down to Shabbona and spend the day. I always recommend people stop at the Shabbona Cafe or Screamers for food and/or ice cream while they are in town too.
Do you wonder what wildlife is utilizing our preserves? This Thursday May 27th between 10am and 2 pm we will be at Sycamore Forest Preserve. (955 East State st. Sycamore.) Patrick and Damon with DCFPD along with Nick from Sycamore Park District, Al Roloff and Carl Von Ende will be there to shed some light on the creatures that share Sycamore Forest Preserve and the surrounding areas with us. Feel free to stop by!

To preserve and restore our natural plant and animal life and protect our natural heritage forest, prairie and wetlands.

Today Pakistan will host the annual, June 5, World Environment Day. The theme is a perfect fit for our Master Naturalists- Ecosystem Restoration. Many of you have volunteered for this activity before by taking out invasive species, collecting seeds, and planting habitat. You are the reason many of our partners are farther ahead on their restoration projects. Kudos to the quiet dedication of Illinois Master Naturalists throughout the state who make a difference with every hour they unselfishly give to our one and only - Earth

As we wrap up the first week of 2021 the DCFPD was busy! The Natural resource crew with help hand seeded roughly 20 acres of wetland and upland at the South Afton Wetland bank mitigation. We also see staff setting up birdhouses and wildlife cover boards to get data on new, current, and established sites. We hope 2021 is a wonderful year for everyone! #DCFPD #seeding #wildlife

We love it when we get feedback and photos from preserve visitors. Here is a note and some photos from Teri Nowak who is a frequent visitor to Sycamore Forest Preserve...

Hello! I am Teri Nowak – someone who loves nature! From fishing trips with my Father when I was growing up, to visiting my Grandma every Summer in Southern Illinois. Her home was rustic and charming, with flower and vegetable gardens. My Family and I used to walk around at different parks and wooded areas near where my Grandma lived.

I worked at the Cook County Forest Preserves as a Police Officer for six years at which time I enjoyed the flora and fauna. Then I went on to be a Police Officer at the Crystal Lake P.D. for another twenty years. I have had time to get out and enjoy nature since I have retired.

I was thrilled to see the Sycamore Forest Preserve open in 2017! I started noticing different kinds of birds and the beauty of them. My lifelong hobby is photography and I started to take photos in this new preserve. It is amazing what I have seen there!

I had a wonderful chance to meet the carver and maintenance worker-Bob Knuuttila. His carvings are awesome! And there is the path that leads right onto the Great Western and now the extension of the pathway underway.

I have met such nice people in my visits to this forest preserve. Many are first timers who ask me if the prairie path goes around and then I explain the entire park to them.

I have spotted Owls, River Otters and other river critters, Coyote, Belted Kingfishers, Fox, Eagles, Herons, Egrets, Cedar Waxwings, Cuckoo bird, etc.

I have attached some of my pictures from Sycamore Forest Preserve so that other can see how wonderful this preserve is.
Thank you for your time!

~Teri Nowak

We have some beautiful streams in DeKalb County that provide habitat to a variety of species. We recently took a closer look at some of the streams that run through the Forest Preserves. In this album are some of the native fish we found. All fish were safely returned to their habitat after being photographed and identified. 10/15/2020
