It is never too early to introduce rhythmic dictation. It helps reinforce rhythm concepts for the ear, the eyes, and the hands.
Teach your students to recognize and recreate rhythms visually and aurally, whether you use numbers (1 2+ 3 4), words (dog pup-py dog dog) (walk run-ning walk walk), or the Kodaly method (ta ta-di ta ta).
In this example, Madeline learned eighth notes using walk and running.
We first clapped and said the rhythm in her book. Then I created new rhythms on a separate sheet and had her clap/say them to me. Then, I clapped a rhythm and had her say it back to me. Finally, I clapped a rhythm and had her say it silently and notate it.
In my experience, students that learn to dictate early are often faster and more accurate when reading rhythms as they progress.

It's that time of year again! Start thinking about fall piano lessons. If you've been looking to get back into piano there's no time like the present. I have fall slots available both locally in Fife, WA and online via Skype or FaceTime.
Check out my website for rates and contact information. I especially love to help church musicians move to the next level in their congregational playing, ear training, accompaniment, modulations, and arranging.

Ok, piano friends, this is one of my favorite lessons (see attached pic) to teach up-and-coming church musicians who are just starting to arrange on their own. I'll just leave it here and let you read through it to see if you can figure it out! Perhaps you'd like to share it with some of your own students.
