One of the biggest misconceptions about Parkinson’s disease is that balance problems only happen in the later stages. New research is showing that balance changes and increased fall risk can actually begin much earlier than many people realize.
Balance is incredibly complex. It’s not just about your legs — it involves your brain, vision, inner ear, posture, coordination, strength, and reaction time all working together. Parkinson’s can affect all of those systems in different ways.
What’s also important to understand is this: medication alone does not always improve balance the same way it helps tremors or stiffness. That’s why exercise and working with a physical therapist or exercise specialist specifically trained in Parkinson’s disease can make such a huge difference.
Another interesting point from the research — multitasking while walking can significantly increase fall risk in people with PD. Something as simple as walking while answering a question or turning your attention elsewhere can make movement more difficult. Sometimes the best strategy is simple: stop, focus, then continue walking.
The earlier people begin evidence-based exercise and balance training, the better. Movement truly is medicine. ❤️
This is exactly what we do every single day at Sweat Therapy Fitness. Working with people navigating Parkinson’s disease isn’t just something we offer — it’s what we specialize in. From balance and gait training to strength, mobility, reaction time, posture, and confidence building, this is our expertise.

Today’s Care Partner Forum was filled with meaningful conversation, connection, and support. ❤️
Our care partners spent time discussing three important topics that impact them daily — sharing experiences, encouragement, and practical ways to navigate the caregiving journey together. These conversations remind us that no one has to walk this path alone.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and continues to make this group such a supportive and caring community. The strength, compassion, and understanding in the room were truly powerful.
