Kickboxing is an umbrella term for stand-up combat sports based on kicking and punching. Because different regions and eras developed their own rules, the martial art branched into distinct styles, including
K-1 (Japanese Kickboxing): A fast-paced hybrid that blends Karate, Muay Thai, and Western Boxing. It permits punches, knees, and kicks (including low kicks). Clinching to wrestle/hold and elbows are strictly forbidden.
Dutch Kickboxing: Derived from a mix of Kyokushin Karate, Western Boxing, and Muay Thai. It is famously aggressive, emphasizing volume striking, heavy punches, and relentless low kicks. Like K-1, elbows and clinching are usually disallowed.
American Kickboxing AKA Full Contact Karate: Developed in the 1970s, blending Karate and Western boxing. Fighters cannot hit below the waist (no leg kicks), elbows and knees are typically banned. This ruleset results in a heavy reliance on boxing-style hands and high karate-style kicks.
Muay Thai ("The Art of Eight Limbs"): Originating in Thailand, this style permits the use of fists, feet, knees, and elbows. It features extensive, fluid clinching, sweeping, and throwing.
SanShou or Sanda (Chinese Kickboxing): Developed from traditional Kung Fu and Wushu. It combines punches and kicks with sweeps, trips, throws, and catch-kicking.
Savate: A French style dating back to the 19th century. It relies almost entirely on foot-kicking techniques and punches, with no knee or elbow strikes. Fighters wear specific, approved footwear.
