How to Become More Optimistic

Is it difficult for you to remain optimistic because of the world-wide pandemic?

In these life-changing times it’s easy to fall under the spell of negative thinking.

The good news is that even in these challenging times you can become and remain optimistic.

Here are 5 things you can do make being optimistic a new habit. Implement these steps and you will reap the benefits of having an optimistic mindset.

1. Think gratitude. Take a moment and write down all the good you've received in your lifetime. Write the small ones as well as the gigantic ones. I’m sure you’ll run out of paper and/or your fingers will begin to hurt

2. Stand in front of your mirror and repeat your strengths.
For example, “I am a great negotiator” Self-doubt and lack of self-confidence suppress optimism.

3. Focus on the things you can change. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Today, not tomorrow, choose one thing you want to change and do something, today, to bring about that change.

4. Celebrate the success of others. Even if you don’t feel like it. You are not being a hypocrite. You’re overriding your negative thinking. Everything is energy and you will attract what you’re thinking.

5. Remember the sun rises and sets. The world doesn’t end with crises nor will it end with your negative mindset. Each day provides another opportunity for your success. Think of each day as a gift. Celebrate it. Give thanks for it. Live each day fully.

Relaxation is an empowering state of mind and body.

Here’s a quick relaxation technique for those moments when you’re feeling overwhelmed and/or stressed.

It will calm your mind, relax your body and sooth your spirit. It takes approximately five minutes and you can do this anywhere that is safe.

Read through the instructions and then do the exercise.

Alert: DON’T DO THIS WHILE YOU’RE DRIVING

Close your eyes, say these words to yourself “I give myself permission to relax quickly.”

Breathe in from your stomach not your chest and give yourself a long, slow, cleansing breath.

Breathe out slowly through the mouth (normally you would breathe through your nose but you breathe through your mouth for quick relaxation).

As you receive this slow, cleansing breath - give yourself permission to relax. Relax your entire face (jaw, cheeks, lips, mouth, tongue and your eyelids) the entire face. LIMP, LOOSE, RELAXED.

Allow your shoulders to relax - let them droop - let go of all the tension - focus only on this moment and feel your relaxation, as it moves through you, from the top of your head down to the tips of your toes, feel your relaxation and allow it PERMEATE YOUR ENTIRE BODY.

Pause for a second after you exhale and enjoy your stillness, your calm, your peace and your oneness with your mind, body and spirit connection.

When your mind wonders, bring it back by focusing on your breathing.

Repeat this exercise 3 times.

Open your eyes and become aware of your surroundings. You are ready to take on the world.
