My friends it’s unfortunately time for us to say goodbye to our dear friend Enrique Gomez. Enrique lived in Globe. His home bar was 2 Lanes Saloon. When you meet him he reminds you of a character from the movie Armageddon, the one who was getting the tattoo on his arm in the beginning. Nothing but smiles and love from the man. To say he loved pool would be an understatement. He loved playing and looked forward to the championships. He loved seeing everyone and would communicate such on FB posts to other players how excited he was. His AZPL career began in 2011 when he subbed a few times then started playing full time in the fall of 2016. Over the next 7 years his game improved and he won MVP awards along with a Most Improved Player award! Over 496 matches he went 824-663 for a 0.554 winning percentage, the 824 wins being 32nd all-time. He scored 11,723 points, good enough for 29th All-Time and a final 23.65 match average during the season. In the championships he averaged 21.32 over 129 matches to win 172 games while scoring 2,743 points. From all of us in the AZPL and beyond… we salute you Enrique for being the wonderful man you always were. Rest in Peace. Bottoms up ladies and gentlemen.

Until next week my friends….thank you.

Congratulations to Bernardo Garcia, Julian Perez & Mike Sandoval of Ohhh Those Guys out of Mills Modern Social on Sundays! They are your 60th AZPL State Champions! They went 5-1 beating Show Us the Money, the Girthy Sirs, 18 Rings, Going for Three and the Dawgs to win $3,995 over the weekend! They also got the exclusive AZPL State Championship shirts and their names immortalized on a banner to be revealed at the next championship! This is Mike's 3rd championship, his first since 2008 and Bernardo & Julian's first!

The 60th AZPL State Championships began on Thursday night at the valley’s newest pool hall Dozer’s Grill located at 7012 E Hampton in Mesa. For those of you who haven’t been there it’s located on Power north of the 60 and features 20 7 foot and 10 9 foot diamonds as well as darts. 16 people signed up for a double-elimination 8-ball tourney. Joe Farias finished in 1st, Jim Rigney took 2nd and Chris Navas finished in 3rd.

On Friday things moved back to Mill’s Modern Social in Tempe. There were 2 singles tournaments – an 8-ball tourney and a 10-ball/9-ball tourney – and 8-Ball Break & Run Derby as well as a ladies 8-ball tourney to play in. It was a race to 1 in all events with a $10 buy in for each. Short & Sweet, Fast & Fun! The singles tourneys were both full at 32 players each. In 8-ball Robert Berry beat out Mike Sandoval twice to go undefeated at 6-0 and win $100! Mike took home $80 for 2nd. Jim Rigney finished in 3rd and won $60. 4th and $40 went to Mike Chapa. Ryan Fedora and Ed Clark tied for 5th and each won $20.

In the 10-Ball tourney it was once again Robert Berry on the hot seat going 5-0 before beating out Mike Sandoval to take 1st and $100. Mike lost to Thomas Shaffer in 10-ball after going 2-0 to go to the 9-ball side. He went 5-0 in 9-ball with his last win being again Thomas setting up the match against Robert. Mike finished with $80 for 2nd. Thomas took home $60 for 3rd. 4th place and $40 went to Dylan Van Eseltine. Ryan Fedora & Chris Navas finished in a tie for 5th and each won $20. Thanks to Anthony Begay for running that bracket!

There were 5 ladies in the women’s 8-ball. Ramona Seabaugh took 1st with Audrey Jake finishing in 2nd and Andrea Carmody taking home 3rd!

We had 30 players sign up for 8-ball break & run derby! In the opening round Joe Farias scored 38 to take the lead. Jim Rigney was 2nd scoring 27. Ryan Fedora, Ed Clark & Mark Hopkins all tied with 14 to tie for 3rd! After round one the bottom 3rd of the field was eliminated. In the 2nd round Jim Rigney scored 21, Ryan Fedora scored 15 and Chris Navas picked off 12 but the leaders at the end of round 2 would be Jim Rigney with 48, Joe Farias with 41 and Ryan Fedora with 30. At the end of round 2 the top third of the field advances to round 3. In that round Chris Navas led the way with 18, Jim Rigney picked up 17 and Robert Berry and Joe Farias each scored 15 but it was Joe Farias with 66, Jim Rigney with 65 and Robert Berry with 43 to advance to the finals! Robert finished 1st with 13, Jim scored 12 and Joe got 1. 1st got $110, 2nd $60 and 3rd $30! Thanks to Lisa Bradford for running this event!

And then there was Saturday! 11 teams were there for the opening round of the handicapped bracket and 7 for the no-handicap bracket. Out of all of those the Nerf Herders won 5 straight to win $315 on Saturday! That was also the longest winning streak of the tourney! At the end of day Going for Three was atop the leader board at 4-0. Rounding out the top 3 in the handicap bracket were Ohhh Those Guys and 18 Rings, both at 2-0. On the No-Handicap bracket it was Ohhh Those Guys Again at 3-0 and the Dawgs at 2-0! Quentin Kilbride was the Power Rating leader at 4.240! He had 111 points and an 11-1 record for Deadstroke! His teammate Steff Moreno led the ladies going 7-4 with 83 points and a PR of 1.218!
12 teams were still in competition in the handicapped bracket on Sunday. Of the 6 teams to start off the morning Shake, Rack and Run went the farthest winning 4 matches before being eliminated by 18 Rings, finishing in 3rd in the handicapped bracket. 18 Rings won out on the loser’s side of the bracket for a rematch against Ohhh Those Guys! In the rematch they lost their only match. The two teams opted to flip a coin instead of a rematch, splitting the $2,000 prize 6 ways and the understanding they split the $1,000 bonus money if they win it. 6 teams were still playing in the No-Handicapped bracket on Sunday. Of those 6 the Dawgs with Andy Benavidez, Sammy Martinez and Michael Kerin went 2-0 to win the bracket, defeating Ohhh Those Guys Again twice, the first time to win the hot seat, the 2nd to knock them out! The Dawgs won $2,000 after that second win!

In the bonus match it was the winner of the Handicapped bracket against the winner of the No Handicap bracket for $1,000. It was Ohhh Those Guys who won the coin flip and home field. Those Guys went up 20-2 finishing 30-9 in the opening round. The Dawgs fought back winning 2 of 3 in the middle round scoring 25-19 narrowing the gap 49-34. Andy beat Mike 10-7 to open the 3rd round bringing it to 56-44 but Bernardo completed the 30 beating Sammy 10-4 to complete the win 76-58 in 8 games!

Gary Wimmer of No Name was the championship MVP going 19-2, scoring 203 points, allowing just 101 and averaged 29.00 points a match, a 3.83 improvement over his career average! His power rating was 4.243 in 7 matches. Steff Moreno of Deadstroke led the ladies with an 11-6 record, 133 points and a 23.47 match average over 6 matches for a 1.847 power rating. They’ll each win $100 for their efforts!

Over the two days we handed out $11,690 from the regular season and $12,815 in the championships for a total payout of $24,505 to over 49 teams! Thanks to Mills Modern Social for adding $1,000 of that and thanks to Jen for handling all those envelopes! 18 Rings led the league with $1,000 won for first place in their division with 12 teams. Last place in all local divisions won no less than $50. In the championships every time you won a match you won cash with each round paying out higher than the last. 38 teams won money in the tournament! Opening round payouts started at $15 and went up from there all the way to $500 in the 8th round. On the losers side payouts started at $10 and went up to $80 before you went on to play for the bracket and $2,000 or $2,500 followed by the bonus round for $1,000! Ohhh Those Guys won $3,995 on top of the $550 they won for finishing in 2nd place during the season! Mike also won $75 for being MVP giving them a total of $4,620 for a team of 3 in a 14-week season! That’s a cool $1,540 each and they didn’t even max out what they could have won, leaving $450 on the table by finishing in 2nd by a mere 5 points which would’ve pushed their total to over FIVE GRAND!!!!

On Sunday all the teams that lost twice on Saturday play in the Third Elimination Bracket! In that event it’s a race to 3 wins every round with a top prize of $750! Of the 40 teams that played in that event it was Chris Navas, Steve Key & Brandon Warren of the Shadow Wizard Money Gang that went 6-0 to claim victory! Congratulations!

For the teams that lost their first match on Sunday they fell into the ‘Guarantee You’ll Play Two on Sunday’ bracket! Of those teams it was Randy Torres, Jason Cote & Adam Garcia of the Lone Rangers who went 5-0 to win a free season! That’s right – no weekly dues for the entire season! Congratulations!

Thanks to everyone for coming out to the 60th AZPL State Championships! It was another amazing weekend! I love seeing all of you! It’s like a family reunion every four months! Thanks to the entire staff of Mill’s Modern Social, especially Taffy & Bella! Those two took charge of the floor and were serving drinks from open to close! They kicked ass for you! Can’t thank them enough for the job they did! And thanks to Kimmy Van Eseltine for taking all the pics!

It was another great season and I’d like to thank all of you for playing in the AZPL. There are a lot of choices out there and you choose us and for that I thank you from all of my heart. I’ve been doing this for 21 years now and I can’t wait to do it for another 21! We’ve got some really big things in the works and I can’t wait to share them with you!

I can share our AZPL Annual coming up July 6 & 7 at Mill’s Modern Social! This one is a team of 5 players competing for $5,000! Build your own team of 5 from players who have qualified for the State Championships via matches played in any one of the previous three seasons (spring 2024, fall 2023 and summer 2023) and represent! Double elimination! It’s a race to your handicap each round! Meaning if your 5 players have a combined rating of 110 (5 players each being 22) your team needs to score 110 points before your opponent scores their total! Team requirements: Must have 1 female, 1 player must be under 20, you can only have 2 players rated above 25 and only 1 of those can be above 30. Regular rules apply!

And we’ll be continuing the Ladies 8-Ball Singles tournaments on the 3rd Saturday of every month at Daddy Os in Phoenix! The next one is May 18th at noon! Race to 3 on the winner’s side, 2 on the loser’s side!

Moving forward to the summer season there will be a few tweaks.
First, I’ll address the next state championships. We will not be playing on the 9s until the 3rd elimination bracket. We will only be playing on 7’ tables during the main brackets whether that be handicapped or non-handicapped.

Second, byes. Effective immediately teams cannot request byes. Your team signed up to play. We play every week. We don’t work around your schedule. If you can’t make it for whatever reason then you get a sub. If you can’t find a sub then it’s a forfeit. The asking for byes has gotten out of hand. I am not concerned that you are playing in another tournament or taking a vacation or whatever the reason is. If your team signed up to play, then it’s you or team’s responsibility to have a sub in your place. Your reasons for not being here shouldn’t disrupt the rest of the league with multiple double-headers.

Third, dues. Some of you feel that you don’t have to pay your weekly dues each week. I’m not sure why that is. You go to the movies, you pay for a ticket at the door. You go to a sporting event, you buy your ticket in advance. Do they let you pay your tee times 3 months after you went golfing? No. Some of you still haven’t paid your dues. But you didn’t have a problem drinking all those beers and eating all that food did you? Quitting mid-season doesn’t absolve you of your unpaid dues either. From now on CAPTAINS when you pick up your envelope you’ll be required to pay in advance. You can collect it from your teammates. Don’t have cash? There’s an ATM in the building. Want to make it really simple? Prepay the entire season. I’ll give you a discount for doing so. Paying weekly would be $224. That’s your weekly dues & greens fees at MMS. Prepay the FIRST WEEK and it’s $217. You want to play, you can pre-pay. I’m tired of waiting and waiting and listening to your reasons why you can’t/won’t/don’t pay. For those of you who do pay their dues on time weekly THANK YOU, this is not directed at you. Bad eggs come in all shapes and sizes and ruin it for all of us. For all of you that STILL owe money from seasons past I’m still waiting.

The summer season begins next week, May 13th at Daddy Os in Phoenix and Dirty Birdies in Flagstaff! Here’s the full line-up of divisions this season:

Monday, May 13th – Daddy Os, 43rd Ave & Thunderbird In-House @ 7pm (No Handicap division)
Monday, May 13th – Flagstaff traveling @ 7pm (Handicapped division)

Weekly dues remain the same at $13. Player entry per division is $15. This season we will be sanctioning with ACS. Their annual dues are $15. We will continue to sanction with BCA as well with scores in those divisions being entered into the Fargo system. If you aren’t sanctioned with BCA, those annual dues are $20.

Some of you are going to the ACS Nationals in Las Vegas May 11-18! I wish you all good luck and hope you win while you’re there! Please let me know who is going and we’ll see you the following week! Thank you!

The season will finish Sunday, August 25th with the 61st AZPL State Championships happening August 29th thru September 1st!

Can’t wait to see you all this summer! It’s going to be Sizzlin!

Our Story

Teams consist of 3 players not including subs. Matches are a 3-on-3 round-robin. We use a "call ball & pocket" format of play. Teams play in the league to qualify for the State Championships. Only 48 teams will qualify. The top 16 teams based on overall strength play on the 9' tables in the Championships Saturday only. The other 32 teams play on 7' tables. On Sunday all teams still in contention play on the 7' tables. First place in the Championships is $1,500. Championship winners are eligible to play in our annual AZPL State Championship Singles Tournament with $1,000 added held every July! For teams that lose twice in the Championships fear not as we have a 3rd elimination bracket that plays out on the 9' tables! Currently the top 16 teams in the tournament get paid out! Every team in the Phoenix metro area receives point money (anywhere from 25 cents to 5 cents a point depending on where they fall in the overall standings). The top four teams in each local division win cash prizes as well up to $750 for 1st place w/ 8 teams being paid out in a 16-team division. The 1st & 2nd Place team in every division as well as the men's & women's MVP will receive trophies. The MVP’s will win cash too! There are four divisions based on skill levels as well. Those division leaders get a sweet 7pm start time in the Championships only 4 wins away from the title match and also receive trophies! The Men's & Women's statewide Most Improved Players & Top Rookies receive trophies too! Weekly dues are $10 per player. We also offer a discount if you play multiple nights as well. Take $2 off your 2nd night of play, $3 off your 3rd if there are divisions in your area. In addition we have a singles tournament with $500 added every season! But wait there's more! In September we have a 3-day 5-event tournament in Globe and we travel to Flagstaff in March to hold another 3-day 5-event tourney!
The site is updated every Sunday. We keep track of several different team and player statistics including points, wins, 30-point games, winning streaks, match average and our own MVP rating in addition to many others. In addition to standings you can find out about tournaments across the valley, all the team schedules, visit each bar’s page to find their location and see their menu, view hundreds of pictures and read the rules.
We at the Arizona Pool Leagues hope you enjoy your time with us and look forward to shooting with you.
