Changing the world with the hope of Jesus: one athlete, one coach, one team at a time. My son Michael was an assistant coach.

Why “Game Seven?”

In February of 2014 I was head baseball coach at University High School. He would be graduating from Illinois State University in May with a degree in Exercise Science. Great advice for all coaches from 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

"Be alert, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong. Do everything in love."

Know your why.

After the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and its walls, the Israelites were under the rule of the Persians. Nehemiah was the King of Persia’s cup holder.

How could a cup holder have a purpose? How could God use a simple position? Instead of Nehemiah asking how, it led him to Who. After Nehemiah prayed, fasted, and mourned, God showed him his why. God showed him that his place as the king’s cupholder put him in a position of favor with the king; he had the opportunity to rebuild the wall around his beloved city of Jerusalem.

Nehemiah's story is a powerful example of understanding one's 'why '. As the king’s cup holder, his purpose was clear: To use his position to rebuild his ancestor’s city with the help of God, for the glory of God. This resonates with coach Bill Wash's words, 'If your why is strong enough, you will figure out how.'

As coaches, you hold significant power and influence. But if your 'why' is solely focused on winning games, you might overlook the potential to build something truly great. Understanding your 'why' in this position is crucial, as it can guide your actions and inspire others.

Game 7 13U were runners up in the Rock Tournament Bracket-buster in Rantoul. Although they finished just short of their ultimate goal, it was a very satisfying second place finish with lots of determination, team camaraderie, and family fun on display all weekend. Big thanks to Jack and Patti Murray for hosting a team BBQ at their farm in between games Saturday.
