Playing it safe can feel like the responsible choice. But safe doesn’t always mean risk-free.

Sometimes the bigger risk is staying on the path you’ve always known because it’s comfortable, predictable, or expected of you.

Growth asks us to make decisions without knowing exactly how they’ll turn out. To cross paths with new people. To pursue a vision that might not make sense to everyone else.

There’s a paradox in leadership and in life: avoiding risk can become a risk of its own.

So ask yourself: What might playing it safe be costing you?

Dolly Parton and Gloria Steinem walked entirely different paths. One sequined and spirited. The other intellectual and unwavering. One gave us music and stories of resilience. The other gave us language for our liberation.

But here's what strikes me about their legacies: they both refused to apologize for who they were.

Dolly didn't soften herself to be more "serious." Gloria didn't soften herself to be more likeable. They each decided what it meant to be a woman on their own terms and built entire lives around that decision.

That's what we talk about at Time to Lead: "Becoming HER" isn't about finding some perfect version of womanhood that the world has already designed for

us. It's about deciding who YOU actually are. And then having the courage to show up that way every single day.

Two women. Two completely different answers to the same question: "Who am I, and what am I here to do?"

Both were exactly right.

Your version of leadership, your version of contribution, your version of power... they're waiting for you to claim them. Not because the world is asking for it. But because you know who you are.

Rest well, Dolly and Gloria. You showed us it was possible.

My son's team went up against the Lakers last Thursday. Not the NBA ones—a powerhouse high school squad that won 56-0 the week before.

Final score: down by 9.

But here's what mattered: halfway through, we could've won. We hung in there. We got close. The scoreboard says loss. The locker room? They walked out knowing they can compete.

🏈 → 💼 Sometimes the score doesn't tell the whole story.

If you're heading into the final stretch of 2026 having reset your goals mid-year, take it from a Ram fan: a close loss is a massive win for your team's confidence and momentum.

Name the small wins. Cheer the momentum. Finish strong.

Perfection sounds like a high standard. But sometimes, it’s just a really effective way to keep yourself stuck.

One of the best lessons I learned in the Marine Corps was to look for the 80% solution. Make the best decision you can with what you know, then move forward.

I’ve carried that into just about every part of my life.

My workouts don’t always go according to plan. My career hasn’t. My family life certainly doesn’t. And accepting that has given me a tremendous amount of freedom.

Have a plan. Have high standards. Do your best.

But leave some room for life to happen.

Progress requires flexibility. Perfection doesn’t allow for it.

I'm writing my fourth book. Solo. In an era where AI just made publishing way more competitive.
