🔴⚪⚫ MANCHESTER UNITED DAILY — FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

Good morning, Tupelo Reds! That’s more like it.

Manchester United’s return to the Champions League ended with a 4–0 win over Sabah at Old Trafford, a first clean sheet of the season, Benjamin Šeško scoring again, and some encouraging performances from players pushing for Sunday’s Manchester derby.

Now the attention shifts immediately to City at Old Trafford.

🏆 UNITED 4–0 SABAH — JOB DONE

United’s Champions League return:

⚽ Matheus Cunha — 28’
⚽ Bruno Fernandes — 43’
⚽ Benjamin Šeško — 45’
⚽ Lisandro Martínez — 69’

Manchester United 4
Sabah 0

United weren’t spectacular from the opening whistle. Sabah pressed aggressively and caused some early discomfort.

But once Cunha opened the scoring, the difference in quality became obvious.

Bruno doubled the lead just before halftime before Šeško rounded the goalkeeper for the third.

Martínez completed the scoring after the break.

United finished with nine shots on target while Sabah didn’t register one.

Perhaps most importantly:

🧤 CLEAN SHEET.

After conceding exactly twice in each of the first three Premier League matches, Carrick finally got the defensive result he wanted.

🏥 SHAW UPDATE — GOOD NEWS

Luke Shaw missed last night’s squad, but Carrick confirmed it wasn’t because of a serious new injury.

Shaw came off against Everton with cramp, and United decided there was no reason to risk him with City coming Sunday.

The hope is that he’ll be available for the derby.

That’s sensible squad management.

If Dorgu can handle Sabah while Shaw gets four days to recover for City, that’s exactly why you build depth.

🔙 YORO GETS HIS CHANCE

Another noteworthy selection:

Leny Yoro started alongside Lisandro Martínez.

Carrick made four changes from Everton, bringing in Yoro, Dorgu, Mazraoui and Šeško while resting Maguire, Shaw, Dalot and Rashford.

Yoro helped deliver the clean sheet and gained valuable Champions League experience.

This is another position worth watching.

United’s defence has lacked pace when playing a higher line.

Yoro provides it.

If Carrick wants United to squeeze the pitch more aggressively, Yoro could eventually become an important part of the solution.

🔥 NOW FOR CITY

Sunday:

🔴 MANCHESTER UNITED vs MANCHESTER CITY 🔵

📅 September 13
⏰ 10:30 AM Central / 4:30 PM UK
🏟️ Old Trafford

City arrive with a perfect Premier League record under Enzo Maresca.

And they’ve already started the derby talk.

New £116m midfielder Elliot Anderson recently described City as the “kings of Manchester”, and Maresca backed his player’s comments today.

Alright then.

Sunday should be fun.

One legitimate concern is recovery time.

City played their Champions League match Tuesday.

United played Thursday.

So City have two additional recovery days before Sunday’s derby — something Carrick already acknowledged wasn’t ideal.

Fortunately, Carrick was able to rest Rashford completely and manage several other players’ minutes last night.

🔴⚪⚫ MANCHESTER UNITED DAILY — WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

Good morning, Tupelo Reds! Champions League football returns to Old Trafford tomorrow.

After three years away from Europe’s top competition, Manchester United begin their league-phase campaign against Azerbaijani champions Sabah FK. Michael Carrick has some real selection decisions to make with the Manchester derby only three days later — and today’s biggest concern involves the one position United failed to strengthen this summer.

Here’s what matters around United today.

🏆 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RETURNS TOMORROW

🔴 Manchester United vs Sabah FK
📅 Thursday, September 10
⏰ 2:00 PM Central / 8:00 PM UK
🏟️ Old Trafford

United are back in the Champions League for the first time since the 2023/24 season, while Sabah are making their first appearance in the competition.

The Azerbaijani club shouldn’t simply be dismissed. Sabah won their domestic league and came through qualifying to reach the 36-team league phase. (UOL)

For United, however, this is exactly the type of home match where three points are expected — particularly with considerably tougher European fixtures coming later.

And then, just three days later…

🔥 MANCHESTER UNITED vs MANCHESTER CITY
📅 Sunday, September 13
🏟️ Old Trafford

That makes Carrick’s team selection tomorrow particularly interesting.

🏥 LUKE SHAW FITNESS CONCERN

This is the injury story to watch today.

Luke Shaw was absent from United’s final training session ahead of the Sabah match, raising doubts over whether he will be available tomorrow.

Shaw remains United’s only established senior specialist left-back after the club decided not to add another one before the transfer deadline. (The Sun)

If Shaw doesn’t make it, Carrick has alternatives — including Noussair Mazraoui and the versatile Patrick Dorgu — but none is a straightforward like-for-like replacement.

And with City arriving Sunday, United will be particularly cautious about taking unnecessary risks.

⭐ MAINOO vs THE NEW MIDFIELD

Another selection battle continues developing.

Kobbie Mainoo has started United’s last two matches and responded well.

Eventually Carlos Baleba enters the equation.

That leaves Carrick choosing among:

🔴 Bruno Fernandes
🔴 Kobbie Mainoo
🔴 Youri Tielemans
🔴 Andrey Santos
🔴 Carlos Baleba

Sky Sports’ analysis today points directly at this issue: United’s squad depth is about to be tested now that Premier League and Champions League matches are coming every few days. (Sky Sports)

Tomorrow is the first real opportunity to use that depth.

🎂 HAPPY 32ND BIRTHDAY, BRUNO FERNANDES! 🇵🇹

Bruno Fernandes was born September 8, 1994 in Maia, Portugal.

Since arriving from Sporting in January 2020, Bruno has become the heartbeat of Manchester

🔴⚪⚫ MANCHESTER UNITED DAILY — TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

Good morning, Tupelo Reds! Today the focus shifts decisively toward Europe. Manchester United are preparing for their first Champions League match at Old Trafford since returning to the competition, Marcus Rashford has given Michael Carrick another selection headache, the defensive numbers remain concerning — and our captain has a birthday today.

Here’s what’s worth knowing without the clickbait.

🏆 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FOOTBALL RETURNS TO OLD TRAFFORD

Next up:

🔴 Manchester United vs Sabah Masazir
🏆 UEFA Champions League
📅 Thursday, September 10
🏟️ Old Trafford

United have begun their official build-up to Thursday’s match, which marks the club’s return to Champions League competition.

Then there isn’t much recovery time.

🔥 Manchester United vs Manchester City
📅 Sunday, September 13
🏟️ Old Trafford

So Carrick has a genuine balancing act: get the Champions League campaign started properly Thursday without compromising United for the derby three days later.

United's official Champions League preview

⚽ STILL FRUSTRATED BY EVERTON 2–2 UNITED

Sunday remains difficult to swallow.

United led Everton twice through:

⚽ Bryan Mbeumo — 46’
⚽ Benjamin Šeško — 88’

…only to concede an equalizer in the 96th minute.

Mbeumo’s strike came just 61 seconds after halftime, while substitute Šeško appeared to have won it before Ainsley Maitland-Niles produced a brilliant long-range equalizer.

The larger concern:

Hull — 2 conceded
Ipswich — 2 conceded
Everton — 2 conceded

That’s six goals conceded in three Premier League matches.

Gary Neville highlighted exactly that problem afterward, warning that United’s habit of conceding goals doesn’t appear to have disappeared.

🏥 INJURY & SQUAD WATCH

The major name we’re still waiting for is Carlos Baleba, who has been recovering from the ankle injury he carried when joining from Brighton.

The original expectation was a return around mid-September.

That puts Sunday’s Manchester derby somewhere around the edge of the possible return window — although throwing him directly into a derby after an injury layoff would obviously be a major ask.

Rashford also came off against Everton after feeling something physically, but Carrick indicated afterward that the initial concern was not serious.

Thursday’s squad selection should give us a clearer picture of where both situations stand.

🔴⚪⚫ MANCHESTER UNITED DAILY — MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7

Good morning, Tupelo Reds. This one is going to sting.

United were seconds away from leaving Merseyside with three points yesterday before a 96th-minute Ainsley Maitland-Niles screamer rescued a 2–2 draw for Everton. United have now taken four points from their opening three Premier League matches, and the early concern is becoming obvious: Michael Carrick’s team can score, but it has to learn how to protect a lead.

⚽ EVERTON 2–2 UNITED — TWO LEADS, TWO EQUALIZERS

United went ahead shortly after halftime through Bryan Mbeumo, who produced an excellent individual finish.

Everton finally equalized through Tyrique George in the 83rd minute.

Then Benjamin Šeško came off the bench and powered home Bruno Fernandes’ cross in the 88th minute.

It looked like the winner.

Until the 96th minute.

Maitland-Niles, making his Everton debut, unleashed a spectacular long-range strike to make it 2–2 with essentially the final kick.

Carrick summed it up simply afterward: “It hurts.”

And it should.

United had three points in their hands twice and couldn’t finish the job.

🔥 MBEUMO CONTINUES TO DELIVER

One of the biggest positives remains Bryan Mbeumo.

After scoring against Ipswich, he found the net again yesterday with a superb finish.

United’s revamped attack is beginning to show genuine potential, and The Guardian noted some encouraging flashes among Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha and Marcus Rashford.

There is still work to do on the chemistry, but the individual quality is obvious.

🎯 ŠEŠKO MAKES HIS CASE

Carrick also received exactly what he wanted from Benjamin Šeško.

Introduced from the bench, Šeško gave United a more traditional focal point and headed Bruno’s delivery past Jordan Pickford for what looked like the winner.

That’s an interesting tactical question going forward.

Carrick has been using the mobility and interchange of Cunha, Rashford, Bruno and Mbeumo.

But yesterday demonstrated the alternative:

Put Šeško in the box and give Bruno somebody to find.

United now have different ways to attack teams.

⭐ MAINOO IMPRESSES AGAIN

Another encouraging afternoon for Kobbie Mainoo.

Manchester Evening News rated Mainoo among United’s best performers at Everton, continuing his strong response after returning to the starting XI against Ipswich.

That’s becoming increasingly important because Carlos Baleba will eventually return.

Rather than simply waiting for Baleba to take a midfield position, Mainoo is making Carrick face a legitimate selection decision.

👀 RASHFORD + SHAW PARTNERSHIP IS BACK

One of yesterday’s more encouraging developments happened down United’s left.

Carrick specifically praised the combination between Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw, describing their relationship as dangerous.

We’ve seen that partnership work before.

A confident Rashford attacking ahead of an overlapping Shaw gives United a completely different threat on that side.

🏥 RASHFORD INJURY — EARLY SIGNS ARE ENCOURAGING

There was one concern.

Rashford was substituted after approximately 70 minutes with a physical problem.

Carrick confirmed afterward that Rashford “felt something”, but the initial assessment is that it is nothing major.

That’s important because United have a huge week ahead.

The Champions League returns Thursday, followed by Manchester City on Sunday.

🏆 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RETURNS THURSDAY

Time to turn the page quickly.

United’s next match:

🏆 Champions League
🔴 Manchester United vs Sabah Masazir
📅 Thursday, September 10
🏟️ Old Trafford

Then comes:

🔥 MANCHESTER UNITED vs MANCHESTER CITY
📅 Sunday, September 13
🏟️ Old Trafford

Europe returning to Old Trafford should be a special night.

But Carrick will surely be thinking about rotation with City arriving only three days later.

09/07/2026

Honestly, this match was so disappointing. 😔 We had the chance to see the game out, but why couldn’t we just hold the ball, pass it around, and waste a few seconds? We didn’t even need a minute - just a few seconds of composure to finish the game. So frustrating as a United fan.
