People say it's hard to make friends as an adult.
And it certainly can be.
But over the past six years, I've made some of the deepest friendships of my life. Friendships that started with a podcast interview, a retreat, or simply reaching out to say, "I love what you're doing."
These women have reminded me that while social media has major downsides when we just scroll, it can also be a place to find people who truly see and get you in your current season of life.
My advice for finding lasting friendship in adulthood?
✨ Find people you can PLAY and laugh with.
✨ People who get excited about your dreams.
✨ And people who don't just accept you, but celebrate you exactly as you are.
Today I'm especially grateful for Adia (), Kara (), Sumer (), Julia (), Sarah (), Samantha (), and Janice (.janicecastro). I could honestly name so many more. (One of the unexpected gifts of my podcast has been meeting the coolest humans.)
I also have lifelong friends I cherish deeply, including some I've known since preschool. But I wanted to share these more recent friendships because they're a reminder that it's never too late to find meaningful connection.
If you've been feeling lonely, please don't lose hope.
Social media can absolutely leave us feeling disconnected. But it can also become a bridge to authentic, life-changing relationships... if we're willing to be vulnerable and risk rejection.
So send the message. ("Wanna be friends?" 😄)
Invite that person to coffee.
Say yes to the Zoom call.
Go to the meetup.
Sign up for the retreat (see what I did there? ;)
All relationships that change our lives begin with one small act of courage.
Happy International Friendship Day to all of my internet friends who became real-life friends. ❤️ (Chicago, Louisiana, and Toronto are all represented in these photos!) I can't wait for our next adventure together.
"I want more freedom."
That sentence sounds so simple. It’s been a guiding light for me for years.
But for so long, I sought freedom in all the wrong places.
I thought it came after I figured out all the things and fully healed myself. I also thought it meant having a ton of stock piled money (it doesn't).
As it turned out, freedom is a feeling. And it’s accessible to all of us now.
Freedom is dancing even though you might mess up, creating before you know the outcome, and making space for joy.
This podcast conversation with Kara is one of my favorites because it captures that shift so beautifully. She really shares how she did not feel free in the past, but when she saw others feeling free, it shone a light on what she deeply wanted.
If you've been waiting until you feel "ready" to start living more fully and freely, I hope this gives you permission to experiment with something different.
Doing so landed me along Lake Atitlan in Guatemala with the one and only Kara Latta, creating collaboratively choreo (something I used to struggle HARD to do) along with
Don't worry... you can bring a playful mindset, even when parts of you want to grade youself on "how good you are at play." LOL
In essence, its all going to be alright, wherever you are in your healing journey.
AND play and a playful mindset can help so dang much.
This week's podcast convo brought me so much joy and re-connected me to the reason I want to make more space for free non-productive play and self-connection.
Do not miss this one, folks! , you are a gem of a human.
I made this video for myself, for when I question why on earth I don't go get a regular job...
I hope you enjoy it, too. 🤣🤣
In all seriousness, entrepreneurship can be amazing, and also very challenging.
But all laughing aside (we laugh so we don't cry? except I do both lol) if you watch to the end of this short clip... you will find out my deepest why and really what keeps me going on this winding roller coaster of a path.
Who are you trying to become lately?
What identity are you stepping into in this season of your life?
I'm stepping into a version of myself who isn't apologetic about pursuing more aliveness and alignment, and work that fits the life I want to live.
It's also creating healing inside of me in a way that I've always craved.
Episode 168 dives into the ways that pursuing meaningful, soul aligned work, can be about so much more than making money (though you are most certainly allowed to want to make money, too), it's about becoming the versions of ourselves we've always wanted to be.
Listen to The Innovative Therapist podcast wherever you get your podcasts and I'd LOVE to hear what you thought!
We don't have to choose between telling the truth and experiencing joy.
This retreat is a place for both. 🤍
Curious? DM me LAKE and I'll send you the details.
Big shifts are happening folks.
I am growing and changing in ways I've always wanted, but couldn't quite access until recently.
I'm sharing very openly about it on the pod this week.
If you've spent much of your life focusing on achieving outcomes to help yourself feel worthy (e.g., losing weight, making more money, being likeable, etc), and you've dealt with a lot of shame, this episode is for you.
I feel like these shifts I'm experiencing are a culmination of so many things.
All the people I interviewed on my podcast have honestly helped in small and big ways. Sarah Buino of , your interview especially comes to mind when you talked about your individual journey of reducing chronic shame. And yours too even though it was so long ago, I still remember so vividly feeling hope for not always feeling so much shame over time. You too even though your ep is still in the queue - coming soon!
When I hear others stories about overcoming shame and embracing unconditional self worth, it gave me so much hope.
Even though I wished I could get a roadmap, I also knew intuitively I had to find my own path.
I'm still on the journey, we are never done growing or healing (to the chagrin of many parts of me, lol), and yet, things feel very different in my body lately.
I feel super freaking proud of myself, how I'm showing up in the world and for myself. And so dang grateful of those who have guided me in where I am today. to name some of the major ones lately.
Keep going friends, healing and the growth you desire is possible. And it's so freaking worth it.
Check out all the juicy details in Ep 168 Can you be proud of yourself before you succeed?
This part of the convo gave me chills.
"Mom guilt" is such a thing.
When I left to attend my first retreat before I decided to host mine, I felt panicky and incredibly guilty. And the thing was only 2.5 hour drive away and only 3 nights!
Julia Nepini of speaks to this honestly in this podcast convo, including the fact that she too had guilt at first. But down the road she's been able to witness the positive ripples effects, for her daughter and her group practice team.
When we pursue our dreams, it's generous to those who love us.
It's showed her daughter whats possible.
And gave her team permission to take time off or do what they needed to do for themselves.
Boundaries are always generous, folks. They just are.
So listen to this episode and get inspired. Your thing may not be speaking, travel, or even entrepreneurship, but I can guarantee your loved ones and family will benefit when you start prioritizing your needs and desires.
