Same exercise. Different dose. 💪

A high school athlete and a 70-year-old client might have very different goals, but that doesn’t mean they need completely different exercises!

We can use the same movement and adjust the speed, range of motion, stance, load or intensity to match the abilities and goals of the exerciser.

Whether you’re training for Friday night lights or for an afternoon with your grandchild, maintaining your athletic ability is key!

Your muscles don’t just “lift” weight. They work in three different ways 💪

Think of it like driving a car:

🔴 Eccentric = The Brakes
The muscle is producing force while lengthening.
• Controls and slows movement
• Helps absorb force
• Example: lowering the dumbbell during a bicep curl

🟢 Concentric = The Gas
The muscle is producing force while shortening.
• Creates movement
• Helps accelerate the load
• Example: curling the dumbbell up toward your shoulder

⚪ Isometric = Neutral
The muscle is producing force without changing length.
• Creates tension without movement
• Helps stabilize and control a position
• Example: holding the dumbbell halfway through a curl

Understanding how muscles contract gives you more ways to change an exercise without always needing to add more weight. If your program mix and matches which contraction you focus on, you’ll be happy with the results!

Heavy weight isn’t bad! But it’s also not the only way to create a training stimulus. 💪

For many of our clients, the goal is to find ways to challenge the muscle while taking a little demand off the joints!

An alternating biceps curl with an isometric hold creates more time under tension, allowing lighter weight to go a long way.

An inverted row with circular pulls changes the direction of the movement, exposing the joints and surrounding tissue to different angles instead of repeating the exact same pattern over and over.

These strategies aren’t about avoiding heavy weights. They’re about having more tools in the toolbox!

You can still train hard and create plenty of stimulus without always asking your joints to absorb more load! Trust us, your body will thank you down the road!

Rehab has to progress! In any reconditioning program, you eventually have to implement techniques that bring you closer to the real world movement!

4 weeks post partial knee replacement, Pat starts with more isolated quad work like seated leg extensions. From there, we can increase the demand with single-leg work on the leg press.

But the knee doesn’t work by itself!

As strength and tolerance improve, we can start integrating more of the ankle, hip and lower leg. Adding mobility, rotation and more complex movement allows the entire system to contribute again.

The progression is simple:

Isolate → Strengthen → Integrate → Move

Every stage has a purpose. The key is knowing when you’re ready for the next one. 💪

Do you have a joint that’s been bothering you? That doesn’t always mean you have to stop training. 💪

Elastic bands can be a great way to maintain strength while working through joint discomfort because the resistance changes throughout the movement.

At the point where the joint may be most vulnerable, the band typically has less tension. As you move into a stronger position, the resistance increases.

We often switch to bands when people are experiencing discomfort in three common places - shoulder, elbow, and knees. These are a few exercises we might use the band in place of a cable system or dumbbells:

🔹 Skull crushers
🔹 Single-arm chest presses
🔹 Lateral lunges

Instead of eliminating a movement completely, sometimes you just need to change the way you load it!

We say it all the time in the gym: it’s better to undercook than overcook.🥩

You can always add more. You can’t take it back.

The logic is simple: if today’s session was a little too easy, you haven’t lost anything. You can add load, volume, intensity, or complexity next time. But if you overcook the session, you can’t undo it. Now you’re dealing with excessive soreness, fatigue, compromised movement, or worse performance in your next session.

Training hard doesn’t mean squeezing every last rep out of every workout. Create enough demand to make progress, leave a little in the tank, recover and come back ready to train again! 💪

Your glutes do a lot more than fill out a pair of jeans! 👖

Whether your goal is aesthetics, athletic performance, or simply moving better in everyday life, strong glutes matter!

Sometimes getting more out of an exercise doesn’t require changing the exercise. Just change the reach.

During a lateral lunge:

↙️ Reach low + outside → creates more internal rotation at the hip
↘️Reach low + inside → creates more external rotation at the hip

Both still load and lengthen the glute, but expose it to different positions and demands.

Put a little more thought into how you move, and you can get a lot more out of the exercises you’re already doing!

Cardio doesn’t have to mean 45+ minutes on a machine!

If life outside the gym gets busy and time is limited, make it count 💪

Pick 3–4 full-body movements and keep it simple:

⚡ 30–60 seconds of higher-intensity work
⏱️ Rest at a 1:1 ratio
🔁 Complete 2 sets of each movement
🔥 8–16 minutes total

Ski erg, sled pushes, rower, Surge, or whatever gets your whole body working!

That might not seem like a lot of time but trust us, your heart rate will be up and your muscles will be burning!

Small changes at the ground can create big changes up the chain!

By changing the environment under the foot, we can change how the ankle, knee and hip have to respond.

✅Elevated heels can reduce the ankle mobility demands of a squat.
✅A slant board can change the position of the leg and increase the stretch on the opposite side.
✅An unstable surface can completely change the demands of a held lunge.
✅The Rotex allows the foot to turn and rotate, creating a different response throughout the entire leg.

Change the environment from the ground up and you can change demand throughout the entire system!💪
