Meant to take more photos but I was having too much fun riding them today. First time taking my Tall Tale on a flow trail in a while and it was so so so so so so much fun. I love this bike. Mountain biking is fun. Hope you had a fun weekend too.

Recently our friend John Watson from The Radavist came to visit the Bay Area and we hatched a plan to take a leisurely two-night tour. After texting route options to each other for weeks leading up to John’s arrival, Adam and I finally settled on a tried-and-true classic route that would launch from our front door at Sklar HQ and explore some of the furthest foggy coastal reaches of West Marin.

Super Something gravel/All-Terrain Bike with our standard Mechanical build kit all ready to roll! Love the way their 48CM frames build up. I have also been liking really shallow drop bars lately like this one from Ritchey. All the hand positions, more braking power but you get to keep mostly the same riding position which is what you want on a bike that gets ridden on dirt. Hope you are getting out to ride this weekend :-)

Some folks have been asking if the “moss green” color is green or grey and the answer is yes. It reminds me of what we’d call Wizard’s beard moss that grew all around Bozeman. It’s almost sagey and in some light definitely grey and some light definitely green. How fun is that?

Going to keep the pre-order open through March.

The Tall Tale is a trail bike. The distillation of my preference for a capable mountain bike geometry honed over a decade of building things and trying them out. For myself and for custom bike customers who could not find what they were looking for. It really does feel like a collaboration in that way: I would take their ideas and blend them with mine until hundreds of bikes later things started to settle out and the bikes looked more and more the same.
A hardtail isn’t an alternative to a full suspension mountain bike, it is a different category altogether and for the rider who likes to go far and get lost or not worry about maintaining creaky suspension, or just feel more connected to the trail, it is a great choice. If you know you know, you know?
Here are some photos from the recent Tall Tale review over at bikepacking.com go check it out if you haven’t. Reviews are funny but Miles ended up buying this bike after so I suppose that’s a good sign.
Also there is a nice yoke photo. A lot of work went into designing that and I think it is a nice detail.
Hope you have a great weekend riding your bike somewhere fun :)

🧦 🚨 Sklock Re-Stock 🚨🧦

The best wool socks are finallly back! After allegedly being “delivered” four months ago, this lost box of Sklocks miraculously appeared at my doorstep. I am excited to be able to share them with you because these really are my favorite, and the only socks I have worn for maybe the last 5 or 6 years on rides and every day in the shop. Pick up a pair for yourself or a friend at Sklarbikes.com

Had the most fun day rolling around some green hills for Jenny and Eric’s birthday ride. This is in Briones park in the east bay hills. Perfect PBJ country (see the third slide). I have been wanting to ride Lafayette ridge (first and last photo) since spotting it while on a different route last spring and finally got to ride it. It did not disappoint. So fun and so beautiful. What a great day, hope you are having a fun weekend too :)

In the words of Toby Keith’s 2003 no. 1 billboard hit country song “I love this Bar”, I love this bar. The PBJ bar was designed to play nice on the PBJ Framesets but I have been loving it son a few other bikes too. I think it makes for a really nice fixie bar and it has been fun to see all the bikes that folks are putting them on. Available now at Sklarbikes.com

Just back from a super fun overnighter with so many friends. Couldn’t have asked for a nicer few days in February. We rode our bikes from home in San Francisco up mount Tam and back in the morning. Hope you had an awesome weekend too :)

As a framebuilder, the fixed gear holds a lot of appeal. No extraneous brazeons and just a few essential considerations of compatibility make the fixed gear a frame and fork in its’ simplest form. It is a fun problem to solve.

At the end of 2024 I had built one frame all year with my own two hands, a far cry from the 30-40 I used to do in my framebuilding-as-a-job days. In most ways I do not miss this craft as a profession. I quit taking custom frame orders in 2020 to finish out my 2-year wait list and started moving the business towards the production bikes you see now. As a product, the production bikes are far, far superior to anything I could have ever done on my own and I have not looked back. However, my connection to the craft has made the transition nice and smooth and all this to say I was feeling a little disconnected. A fixed gear felt like just the thing to keep it alive.

I’ve had my sample PBJ for about 6 weeks now and I love it sooooo much. I have a little write up on the blog of the three configurations I have tried out so far - rigid SS, geared rigid and squishy SS. So far the hardest part has been choosing which one to keep around because they are all super fun. Check out the write up on the blog at SklarBikes.com

The pre-order for PBJ framesets is open now! So far all sizes and colors are still available but S, XS and XL are starting to run a little thin but I should have enough to have some in stock when they land this summer as well. Thanks so much to everyone who has already pre-ordered. Really couldn’t do it without you, it helps a ton!!

Sandwich mag is back! In issue 5 I get ~opinionated~ while reminiscing back on three nice bike tours I did with some pals over the last year or so. Learn why I don’t share paint codes, the secrets to going on a fun and chill bike tour and most importantly get something cute to put on your coffee table. I have a limited number up on the site now until they are gone. Thanks for reading.
