Spur Pool Advisory Committee meeting Thurs., Feb. 27, 2020—Notes compiled from committee discussion
For friends of this page interested in the committee's work, here's a summary from last week:
The Spur Pool Advisory committee has been charged with assessing Spur’s swimming pool/bathhouse situation from a citizens’ point of view, and recommending approaches and actions to City Council.
Based on the direction from City Council at the Feb. 18, 2020, Town Hall, the topic for discussion is how to utilize the approximately $50,000 in funds already raised in a purpose consistent with the pool project—not how to finance a swimming pool at present.
Yet it was evident from the conversations at the Feb. 27 first committee meeting that the majority of us are still focused on how to secure a swimming pool for Spur somehow, someday. Participation was enthusiastic and forward-thinking, with well-thought-out cautions on avoiding any unworkable plan or unwise financial action.
With that overall sentiment in mind, our ideas are taking shape toward a plan that restores the historic bathhouse facility to use while integrating it into an overall, long-range park and pool usage plan.
Tapping into the extensive experience of the committee in state parks, historic preservation, funding sources, school interests, and costs of public services, we think we can put together a recommendation for City Council within a few weeks.
Anyone is welcome to share constructive ideas on this FB page!
—Barbara Brannon, committee chair

LET’S POOL OUR RESOURCES
Friends of the Spur Pool: On behalf of a newly formed committee of citizens to help advise the City of Spur on a plan for our historic pool and bathhouse, I want to invite all friends of this page to “Follow” in addition to your “Like,” so that you can stay in the loop with developments and add your own ideas.
Let’s use this page as a forum for our work, which we hope will be prompt, imaginative, inclusive, and productive.
First off, huge thanks to the City of Spur (mayor, city council, and city secretary) for hosting a well attended Town Hall Feb. 17. Mayor Louise Jones remains committed to finding a way for Spur to have a swimming pool once again, if at all possible. We haven’t exhausted all the options yet! We may have to be creative — and patient.
In the meantime, while a number of Spurites voiced their concerns about any plan that would raise taxes to fund construction and/or maintenance, most of those in attendance last week seemed to favor restoring the bathhouse portion of the facility as a starting point, especially as a way of providing safe, clean restroom facilities for all park events while we continue to ponder the pool problem. And all favored formation of a committee to advise the Council on ideas, solutions, and approaches.
We’re especially intrigued with the possibilities of leveraging historic preservation funding (in various state, federal, and private forms) to accomplish any of this.
If you’re interested in assisting on this committee, which as of now has representation from the Dickens County Historical Committee, the Spur Area Chamber of Commerce, The Texas Spur newspaper, and more, please let me know at barbara (dot) brannon @ gmail .com — or post to this page.
We hope to hold a first meeting the week of Feb. 24. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for voicing your ideas here, briefly and respectfully! And to those who have already contributed to the Pool Fund, thank you — we aim to see that those funds are used toward this goal. For those who still wish to donate, the Spur Area Chamber of Commerce maintains the Pool Fund at Spur Security Bank and will be happy to add your gift to it.
