Most athletes think recovery happens on rest days.

In races, it happens in seconds.

New workout on Substack — Broken 800s and the skill of training the space between efforts.

That moment between efforts — what this workout trains.

Most coaching conversations disappear after the workout ends.

That’s part of why I started writing.

I coach runners, along with HYROX and CrossFit athletes, and over the years I’ve realized that the most important parts of training often happen outside the workout itself:

Consistency.
Pacing.
Confidence.
Running form.
Learning how to train hard without burning out.

Substack has become a place where I can go deeper into those ideas — beyond splits, intervals, and programming.

Some recent topics:
• The 10-Minute Run
• HYROX training mistakes
• Why interval sessions matter
• Building aerobic strength without always going harder

If you enjoy the coaching and training content I share here, I think you’ll enjoy the longer-form version there too.

I got out for a run in the snow today. I love running in the snow! And then we got out for a ski tonight! It was so beautiful and so much fun to ski around the city.

It was a cold morning today, 4 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 15 Centigrade), but I got a one-hour ruck in with 35 #. I actually enjoy the challenges of working out in inclemente weather -- tomorrow might be an even bigger challenge with the snow!

We enjoyed watching the Gran Prix track meet today at . The highlight for me was watching Josh Hoey set the world record in the 800 meters with a blazing time of 1:42.5! And our seats were right behind Anna Hall's (world champion heptathlete) mother. We got to watch Anna compete in the long jump and 400. The tickets were a gift from my wife. What a fun day!

So happy for this group of athletes from that I had the pleasure of coaching, including a few more not pictured here. Impressed by the solid efforts from all of them at the Boston HYROX competition. I love seeing their hard work pay off. And it was awesome to see so many podium finishes!

I had the pleasure of coaching these two today. is a rower that has competed in two Olympics! How cool is that? is also an amazing athlete -- a rower and triathlete, having completed a full Ironman race. These two are so cute together -- supporting each other but also a little competitive in a fun way. They are both preparing for the upcoming competition in Boston. They made great improvements in their running form and pushed through a tough workout. What a treat it was for me to get to coach them!
