Hi Everybody, I received this request for a volunteering opportunity, please check it out and contact Ali if you are interested:

Hi! I'm Ali, the Coaches Coordinator for Girls on the Run of the Rockies. We are a 10-week after school program for 3rd-8th grade girls in the Front Range, teaching healthy habits and confidence while training for a 5k race. Our program relies on volunteers to help Coach at the almost 160 schools we are currently in. Unfortunately we recently had a Coach who could not commit the time anymore in Aurora. We were hoping you could pass on the volunteer opportunity to your Running Group. We are looking for a woman in the community to help another experienced Coach help with practices Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15pm-5:00 at Aurora Academy Charter School,10251 East 1st Avenue, Aurora, CO 80010. The program goes through May 16th and the final 5k race is Saturday, May 9th at City Park! I would be happy to answer any questions or talk directly to anyone. My email is [email protected] and can be reached at 631-365-2107. Thank you for passing along this volunteer opportunity! You are helping to inspire young girls in the Colorado area! Best, Ali

Rock n roll Denver here we come!

15/10/2014

The Denver Rock N Roll is quickly approaching. Race will have only one start time for every distance: 7:15am so I want to invite everyone running that day (any distance) to meet right next to the Gear Check up tent at 6:30am. This tent is located inside the Civic Center Park.

Bring your phone or picture camera for some fun morning shots and your bag with your personal items (avoid leaving valuables). We will take some pictures, warm up, check in our bags and then head to the corrals to start the race.

Plan for the following:

- Bag and bib pick up: Friday October 17th: 1:00pm – 7:00pm OR Saturday, October 18th: 9:00 am – 5:00pm Colorado Convention Center • Hall F (700 14th Street, Denver, CO 80202)
Free Admission: Open to the public. Parking lot at Convention Center is $12 for up to 8 hrs.

You have to pick up your bag, no one else can do it for you. Bring your ID and Confirmation sheet that was sent to you through email. IT has to be signed.

- Race Day: Full and 1/2 Marathon, Relay, 10k & 5k Start Time: 7:15 am
Runner Start Line: Bannock and 14th Street Civic Center Park.

Parking that morning will be tricky, plan to arrive as early as possible. All parking lots around the Civic Center park are open on a first come first serve basis. Try to carpool if you can. Bring cash to pay for parking.

- Course support: There will be 6 water, 3 Gatorade stations and 1 GU station along the ½ marathon course. Check the link below to see exactly where these tables will be.

Race Info Guide:http://runrocknroll.competitor.com/files/2014/10/DEN14_RaceWeekendParticipantGuide.pdf

I will appreciate if you can send me a reminder of who will be running this Sunday and what distance. Kelley and I want to make sure we keep an eye on you guys.

Please go back to our Running Club emails and review all the suggestions we have shared for pre-race and race-day.

Remember to eat healthy this week, water load all week long, carb load if you stomach likes that the day before, have a healthy and good breakfast Sunday morning, wear layers, be prepared for sun later in the race, check your music and batteries, etc, etc, etc!

Let me know if you have any questions or would like any advice on a particular topic.

We are looking forward to having fun and a great race on Sunday!!!

How to make the time go faster and alleviate some of the boredom
In a brief conversation with Erin Orcutt last Running Club we talked about that moment when you are running and you feel "you are hitting a wall, asking yourself what the h... you are doing there, and why you aren't going home already". You will be very lucky if this never happens to you. But assuming this is in your future, and it will happen to each of you at different points on your runs, I thought it might be good idea to share some tips for when those (not so) glorious thoughts hit you. I personally like to play some simple games to take my mind out of the situation and stop thinking about the time, the mileage, what is hurting, or even when I'm simply feeling bored. Then I do things like:

- Counting runners with special characteristics such as: wearing long socks, wearing hats, wearing funny t-shirts, looking more tired than you, etc. OR

- Counting people in the crowd with for example: signs, kids, dogs, red or green or yellow t-shirts, etc. OR

- Counting backwards from various numbers during your run, OR

- Counting every time your RIGHT foot hits the ground by tens (so I count: 1 right, 2 right, 3 right, to 10 right, then again 1 right, 2 right, 3 right, to 20 right, then 30 right, etc.) OR

- Say a mantra over and over...like: "My body is strong, thank you". repeat, "I'm feeling strong,". repeat, or "I could run like this all day". repeat, or "I'm gonna do this", OR

- I like math exercises so for example I think how old will be my Sofia, my JP and my Ema when I turn 68 years old, and then how young :) I will be when my niece graduates from High school, or how old each member of my family will be when President Obama finishes his current term, or how many letters each name adds up, OR whatever you can come up to keep you thinking in numbers :), OR

- Concentrate really hard on your music and each word on that song, OR

- Actually the opposite... turn OFF your music and focus solely on your breathing. Much like during yoga practice you can sometimes just "zone out" by concentrating on your breath. You also focus on a picture in your mind of what you want to accomplish for yourself that day: LIKE FINISHING THAT RACE, or being healthier/in better shape...whatever your goal is, OR

- Find one person or a building or a tree or a car several meters ahead of you and focus on passing that icon, then find another, and so on. Avoid looking at your watch/phone and let your mind fly avoiding the concern of where you are in the race. Continually winning these small battles helps win the war.

(**) If you want to add other simple games to this list, please go ahead! this helps us all! POST ON our FACEBOOK PAGE

My First Half Marathon: 8 Lessons I Learned

Are planning to come to our RC this Saturday morning? This is for every Club Member, including 5Kers who are done with their training session but are always welcome to join us!

For those participating in the 2014 Denver Rock N Roll on Sunday you can take Saturday off and rest in preparation for your race OR you can come to RC and do a very short run just to make sure your body is prepared for the next day run. So this would be no more than 2.5 miles.

PLEASE, post a quick YES or NO, if you are or not planning to come on Saturday.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE
