SMART Goals for Kids: Start with “S” = Specific 🥋

In our last post, we talked about how SMART goals help kids follow through instead of giving up when things get hard.

Today, we’re starting with the first step:
S = Specific

Most goals fail, not due to a lack of effort, but because they’re too vague.

If a child says:
❌ “I want to get better”
…it’s hard to know what to do next.

But when we make it specific, everything changes.

Taekwondo Example:
❌ “I want better kicks”
✅ “I will chamber my knee higher on every roundhouse kick during class this week.”

Real Life Example:
❌ “I want to do better in school”
✅ “I will study my vocab words for 15 minutes every night before bed to have better grades.”

Specific goals give kids a clear target—and confidence because they know exactly what to focus on.

💡 As a parent, try asking:
“What exactly do you want to improve?”
“How will we know if you did it?”

This is where growth really begins.

👇 Let’s practice together:
Parents, comment ONE specific goal your child set to work on this week (martial arts or life).

We’ll help encourage and refine them 👊

How to Help Your Child Actually Achieve Their Goals 🥋

Most kids don’t struggle with having goals…
They struggle with following through.

That’s why we teach something called SMART goals.

SMART stands for:
✔️ Specific
✔️ Measurable
✔️ Achievable
✔️ Relevant
✔️ Time-bound

It gives kids a clear plan instead of just a wish.

Taekwondo Example:
Instead of “I want to get better at kicks”
➡️ “I will practice my roundhouse kick 10 times each class for the next 4 weeks.”

Real Life Example:
Instead of “I want better grades”
➡️ “I will study math for 20 minutes, 4 days a week, until my next test.”

Over the next few days, we’ll break down each part of SMART goals so you can help your child build confidence, stay consistent, and finish what they start.

Because the real lesson isn’t just setting goals…
It’s learning to stick with them—even when it gets hard.

💬 Comment “GOALS” below and we’ll send you a simple guide to help your child get started.

Throughout this communication series, we’ve talked about how communication is a skill that must be taught, practiced, and reinforced — not something kids are expected to “just figure out.”

Our Basic Martial Arts program in Valparaiso helps students develop communication through structured training, positive leadership, and consistent expectations. From listening and following directions to speaking up with confidence, students practice these skills every class.

Martial arts gives kids a place to:
✅Learn respectful communication
✅Build confidence in how they express themselves
✅Develop leadership habits early
✅Apply these skills at school, at home, and with peers

These lessons support physical development — but more importantly, they help shape how children interact with the world around them.

Communication is the link between the world and me — and it follows me everywhere.
The habits formed today shape the leader someone becomes tomorrow.

Martial arts doesn’t just train bodies — it trains voices, attitudes, and awareness. Students learn when to speak, how to listen, and how to communicate with confidence and respect.

These are life skills that extend far beyond the mat — into classrooms, relationships, and leadership roles.

What communication habit do you think has the biggest impact on a child’s future?

01/29/2026

Communication is a skill — and skills must be practiced.
In martial arts, students practice communication every class: listening under pressure, responding with respect, and speaking with confidence.

Leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice. It’s about clarity, self-control, and understanding others. Martial arts creates an environment where kids learn to communicate calmly — even when challenged.

That discipline carries into school, sports, and life.

What muscles does martial arts actually build? 💪
More than most people realize.

Martial arts training develops the muscles kids use for real-life movement—not just exercise.

Through structured drills and age-appropriate training, students build:
• Strong legs for balance and coordination
• Core strength for posture and body control
• Upper-body strength for stability and confidence

But just as important as physical strength is what happens along the way.

Kids develop:
✔️ Confidence through progress
✔️ Discipline through structure
✔️ Focus, listening skills, and perseverance

This isn’t about pushing kids past their limits.
It’s about helping them grow stronger—physically, mentally, and emotionally—one class at a time.

If you’re looking for an activity that builds fitness and life skills, martial arts gives kids a foundation they can carry everywhere.

Communication is the link between the world and me — and I’m responsible for that link. The way I communicate can build confidence… or break connection.

Martial arts teaches students to take ownership of their words and actions. Whether giving a respectful “yes sir,” asking for help, or standing up for themselves, communication becomes a leadership skill — not a reaction.

These lessons apply everywhere: school, friendships, family, and future careers. Strong communicators become strong leaders because they’re understood and trusted.

You don’t have to be in shape to start.
You start… and you get in shape. 💪

One of the biggest myths about martial arts is that you need to be fit before you walk in the door.

At Experience Martial Arts, our adult classes are built for real people—
✔️ Busy schedules
✔️ Different fitness levels
✔️ Zero pressure to “keep up”

Training naturally builds:
• Strength and endurance
• Confidence and discipline
• Focus, stress relief, and mental toughness

This isn’t just a workout.
It’s structured training that challenges your body and sharpens your mindset—while helping you feel more capable, more confident, and more in control.

If you’ve been thinking about getting active again, learning self-defense, or finding a workout you’ll actually stick with, starting with a class can be a powerful first step.

Communication is the link between the world and me.
How I speak, listen, and respond shapes how others understand me — and how I understand them.

In martial arts, students learn that communication isn’t just talking. It’s eye contact, posture, tone, respect, and timing. On the mat, clear communication builds confidence and trust. Off the mat, it helps kids express themselves, solve problems, and lead with respect.

When a child learns to communicate well, they don’t just follow instructions — they understand purpose.
