This is what Dirt Bro Elite Infield Academies are all about.

We had the opportunity to spend the weekend in Gibsonville, NC working with a great group of players at The Dugout Training Facility, and feedback like this from Derek Wilkie means a lot.

Our goal isn’t to just give players a good camp experience. It’s to teach the details, routines, and knowledge they can continue using long after the camp is over.

Thank you to Derek, The Dugout, the parents, and every player who trusted us with their weekend. We loved every minute of it. 👊⚾️

A simple drill with a lot of value.

Here we’re working tennis ball ground balls from our knees. Taking the feet out of the equation isolates the hands and forces you to trust your reactions. You don’t get the luxury of using your feet to go find the hop you want. However the ball times up to you, you have to handle it.

The key is keeping the hands soft and loose no matter what hop you get. Great infielders use their feet and judgment to find good hops, but the game doesn’t always give you that opportunity. Sometimes you have to improvise and handle a tough hop when there’s no time to create a better one.

We also turned it into a competition. Compete as often as you can. Put something on the line, even if it’s just pride. Competition brings out another level of focus and intensity and is about as close as you can get to recreating the feeling of a game.

Corey Ragsdale sharing the importance of prep step landing timing, with video evidence to show exactly what he’s talking about.

Even at the highest level of the game, the smallest details can be the difference between making a play and not making a play.

This takes practice. You have to work on it during BP and experience it in games until you start to understand and feel the timing.

Once you do, you start getting to balls you didn’t know you could and making plays that others won’t.

Small details make a big difference.

There is so much that goes into playing elite defense. But 99% think all you just go take ground balls or do some drills and you’re fine to compete with players at the highest level… the elite of the elite defenders are playing chess…. So put the checkers down and become a student of the game.

We always talk about ways to train when everything is going right, but what about when you have a setback?

If you’re dealing with a hand injury, especially to your top hand, there are still ways to stay fresh and keep developing so the adjustment isn’t as steep when you get back. One of the best things you can do is learn how to square up a baseball ONE HANDED with a regular sized bat.

Start with front toss, move to dart feeds, then overhand BP, and eventually even machine work. You’ll be surprised what you can do.

This is a great way to build strength in your bottom hand, isolate it, and teach it how to control the barrel without relying on your top hand. Then when you get healthy and put both hands back on the bat, two hands almost feels like a cheat code. Your bat speed, barrel control, bat to ball skills, and confidence can all benefit from it.

And this isn’t just something to do when you’re injured. It’s great work to mix into your training when you’re healthy too.

Find a way to keep getting better, even when things don’t go according to plan.
