πβοΈ DID YOU KNOW? Our Sun Is Racing Through the Galaxy, Carrying Earth Along for the Ride! ππ
We may feel like we're standing still on Earth, but in reality, our planet is traveling through space at an astonishing speed!
βοΈ The Sun's Incredible Galactic Journey
Our Sun orbits the center of the Milky Way galaxy at approximately 828,000 km/h (515,000 mph). Yet, because our galaxy is so enormous, it takes the Sun around 225β250 million years to complete just one orbit. Scientists call this a galactic year or cosmic year.
π How Many Times Has the Sun Traveled Around the Galaxy?
The Sun formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago and has completed roughly 18β20 galactic orbits throughout its lifetime. That means the dinosaurs lived during a relatively recent chapter of our Sun's incredible journey around the galaxy! π¦β¨
π₯ But Even the Sun Has an Expiration Date
Our Sun won't shine forever. In about 5 billion years, it is expected to exhaust the hydrogen fuel in its core and expand into a massive red giant. Eventually, it will shed its outer layers, leaving behind a dense stellar remnant known as a white dwarf.
π The Mind-Blowing Reality
Right now, as you read these words, Earth is orbiting the Sun, while the Sun is racing around the center of the Milky Way. Every planet in our solar system is traveling along with it!
We aren't just living on a planetβwe're passengers on an incredible cosmic journey through the universe. π€―π
