Remember December? It sure was sweet!
It feels like most years we get a January warmup that leaves us wondering when winter will come back. It's a great opportunity to dig deep for objectives that would normally be left till spring, or spend some time focusing on the other skill sets that are part of being a competent backcountry traveler.
Do you feel good and current with your level of avalanche education?
Are you looking to mix some rope skills into the game and need help getting dialled?
Want to go big and ski some beautifully timed corn high above the valley floor?

Sometimes you stick with the plan and other days it's essential to improvise. We wanted to spend the morning working on companion rescue as part of an avalanche awareness day.
With 16°f temps at the trailhead, standing around wasn't in the cards for the day. We adjusted our schedule - educational content got broken into short blocks, we substituted longer lessons for shorter ones and got more skiing in that kept us warm and smiling!

Temps are dropping and it looks like winter is finally showing up! ❄️
Here are some of the things we're doing to get ready for the snow that on it's way:
✅Scrape wax off skis
✅Put batteries back in transceiver
✅Refresh first aid kit
✅Dive into local weather and avalanche forecast
✅Do our best snow dance 💃🕺
What else do you do to prepare for the season?
There's still time to book skiing and classes for January and February!

.riano reached out over a year ago, wanting to work on skills for moving independently through complex glaciated terrain.
Our first attempt at going to Mount Baker was shut down by a global pandemic, and this years North Ridge plans were thwarted by unprecedented early season heat waves.
Fortunately, with an open mind and a little creativity, we were able to pack three days full of climbing and skills that exceeded expectations, with great views to boot!
