Consistency is key!

I often feel as though I sound like a broken record... but consistency is so important! Not just in sleep training but in raising sweet little humans!

Consistency makes our little ones feel safe. It can also help in reducing power struggles between parents and kids (toddlers especially) if they know what to expect and can anticipate things before they happen!

I just read this short article that basically says by teaching repetition (aka being consistent) that it helps you raise confident kids (see link below)!

The ABCs of sleep are superimportant so make sure you know them!

✔A - alone
✔B - back
✔C - crib

Baby should ALWAYS be placed ALONE, on their BACK, in a CRIB.

Please make sure the products you are using for sleep are safe. If anything markets a product as safe for "supervised sleep" then it's best not to use it for sleep at all!

Good sleep starts with safe sleep!

One of the questions I see asked the most amongst sleep training Facebook groups is: "do I need to sleep train"? Or comments like, "I guess I need to sleep train".

The answer is pretty simple though. If sleep in your house isn't working for you then YES, you need to sleep train. If you're fine with whatever the situation is, then NO.

You and only you should be deciding if sleep training is right for your family... and in turn, you shouldn't criticize someone else's decision to sleep train.

If your toddlers are sneaking into your bed at night but you like the snuggles... then why bother sleep training?!

If your 4 month old wakes up 4 times a night to eat but you think those moments are precious... then again, why bother sleep training?!

Sleep training can be extremely rewarding but it takes a lot of work. I usually tell clients it's going to get worse before it gets better... but if you're committed and consistent then you can usually see noticeable progress within a couple of weeks.

Myth or fact?!

Formula fed babies sleep better than breastfed babies?!

Myth. Definitely a myth. While there can be pros and cons to each feeding method for a baby, one does not necessarily make a baby sleep better.

Here's what does make a better sleep better. Full feedings! Full feedings are best and easiest achieved when you are on a feeding schedule of some kind. I generally suggest every 3 hours. By feeding on a schedule you are giving your baby time to work up an appetite to take in a FULL feeding rather than a snack. So what you feed your baby should be whatever works best for you and your baby!

This is why corelle plates are the best! Watch around the 27 second mark.

Bailey rams into the kids table, the plates fall off, hit the driveway (asphalt) and they're still in one piece! They're not unbreakable but they are break resistant which is good enough for me!

On another note, the plates weren't outside because we were eating out there. The kids take the plates and cups to put dirt and rocks on... and then leave them out there for days... because they're animals.

Every parent needs these plates!

Avent soothie pacifiers are my favorite!

Many people wonder if pacifiers can be used when sleep training. The answer is YES, they can... but only if used appropriately and in line with whatever sleep training method they choose!

A helpful tip - for babies who can pick up a pacifier, sprinkle a few (3, 4, 5 of them) in the crib! Babies are notorious for losing them during sleep. Or throwing them out of their cribs. By leaving extras in the crib you can avoid potential crying as it relates to the pacifier!

Many tired parents often complain of early wake ups... there are a number of reasons this can happen and sometimes figuring out the cause can be difficult.

However, the biggest cause of early morning wake ups is this: the first nap of the day is too early in the morning. Many parents think their little one is too tired and has a smaller wake window in the AM. While this can be true, it is likely why your little one is waking early. An early nap just reinforces the early wake up. Be mindful of that first nap and make sure it's AT LEAST the length of a normal wake window for your baby's age.

The only problem with sleep training... they kick you out of their room! 😂

Side note/tip: keep your toddler in a crib until AT LEAST 3!

Crib mobiles...yay or nay?!

There are differing opinions out there on crib mobiles...

If you ask me, the answer is YES, use a crib mobile. My theory is when baby wakes up in the morning (or from a nap) that it gives them something to look at so that they patiently (and quietly!) wait for you to come to them! If you use crib mobile, I would suggest one that hangs (securely) from the ceiling. It should be high enough that even when baby stands and reaches that they cannot touch it. Otherwise you could be creating a choking hazard should baby pull pieces off. There are also mobiles that hook directly onto the crib, while these can be cute, they can also create an unsafe sleeping environment.

Some people say not to get one, arguing that it creates too much stimulation so that instead of baby sleeping, baby is wide awake and playing. I don't agree with this but if you do, maybe use it above your changing table... it's much easier to change the diaper on a happy baby!

Do you use a crib mobile?!

P.s. this is my cute crib mobile!

My sleep training skills are pretty legit...but my skills in teaching my kids how to be responsible human beings, not so much!

My kids have never seemed to go a meal without breaking something, spilling something or ruining something. They are sweet angels but they're also reckless and nutso! Yes, they're cuter while sleeping! 😉😊

Enter my favorite plates/dishes ever! Corelle! They are not unbreakable but they're break resistant! And if my crazy kids haven't broken them, then yours won't either!

These plates are microwave and dishwasher safe and they're light! Heavy plates drive me nuts! They have all sorts of fun patterns. I guess even with 3 kids, we can have "nice things" after all!

Not sleep related but too awesome not to share! You're welcome!

Introducing first foods to your baby is a really exciting time!

The AAP suggests starting solids between 4 and 6 months. You should discuss with your pediatrician at baby's 4 month checkup to see when the right time for your baby to start is!

My favorite first foods:

1. Start with oatmeal! You can mix breastmilk, formula or even water with this. This is a great first food to try to introduce your baby to the spoon and solids!

2. Avocado! Take half of an avocado and mash it up like you would to make guacamole! Other foods to mash up: sweet potatoes, butternut squash, bananas! What I like about these foods is that baby gets used to texture in foods!

3. Pouches and/or jars are also a great (and easy) thing to try! I mostly suggest sticking with vegetables in the pouches at first.

What are your favorite first foods?!
