The importance of sling stowing.

As a general principle, you should be lacing up your equipment as well as you can. Pack straps properly cinched and stowed, footwear properly laced, chest rig/ plate carrier adjusted properly and excess material managed, and of major importance… your carbine sling.

The ability to have a sling stowed when you don’t need it is a requirement. Especially for working out of a vehicle. Both in training and and in real incidents I’ve seen slings get caught on rifle mounts, steering columns, shifting knobs/levers, visors, interior door handles, E-brakes, etc.

You will never rise to an occasion, you will fall to your level of training. If your sling gets caught upon exit the observed default reaction is panic and violent jerking of the weapon in hopes you will somehow get it free of it’s snag. Under duress, humans will default to what they know, or what feels natural.

To alleviate this issue, RAS Group came up with their own idea of a sling retainer, designated the ESR, or enhanced sling retainer. Designed to be minimal, it is an elastic based system that works with a wide variety of slings and rails that are on the market. Not all, but most. There’s a ton of great options out there, this is just our idea.

Standby though, the USR, or universal sling retainer is on currently in prototype production. Ideally, it will be able to tackle a wide range of set ups. But all in good time.

Stay safe, stay trained.
