“When you start to think the climbing community is immune to racism, think again...Is climbing the classic four star route more important than calling these developers out on their bu****it? Are you ready to listen to a Black climber who expresses how actions like these don’t invite inclusivity into the community?”

While climbing in Tensleep, WY month, we got this picture of Venga co-founder Court on a climb called “Happiness in Slavery.” While in the canyon, we were lucky enough to be graced with the presence of . On top of being a wildly strong climber (she probably climbs stronger than you) and a force of inspiration, she also happens to be Black. We’ve learned a lot listening to her stories and thoughts on the climb names in Tensleep. We’d like to encourage you to follow Genevive, listen to her thoughts on her podcast episode, and reflect on how you can help create a more inclusive community by speaking up.
Many of these names in Tensleep have now been successfully changed as a result of open conversations between the first ascensionist and the local climbing community, and the updates have been adopted by both Mountain Project and the local guidebook authors.
We’re working on resources to help climbers continue to combat racism in their home crags. Please reach out to us if you are interested in collaborating .
“I want to see people really caring to make a change. I want there to be an actual change. Not a surface change - I want it from within. I think everybody has to be open to listen to us.” - Genevive Walker, Power Company Podcast, June 24, 2020. @ Ten Sleep, Wyoming

Climber Spotlight: Michaela Kiersch

In the second week of school, I show “The Golden Ticket” to start a conversation about what it means to have a growth mindset. Despite being “non climbers”, the students are immediately sucked in. They “oh” and “awe” at each fall. Turn to their friends and mouth, “This bitch is crazy!”

Hangageddon - the first ever hangboard league starts this Friday, March 27th! Signup on the Venga App, pick any gym and join the league! All hangboards will work, all you need is a sloper, edge and pocket.

If you are new to hangboarding or have taken a few weeks off, please start slow! Warm up, do a light hangboard workout and then record your max hangs. If full weight is too much, use your feet to take some weight off! Be safe and see you on the leaderboard!
