You might have noticed this before.
Someone is completely absorbed in something they enjoy…
a game, a conversation, a task they’re focused on…
and their tics seem to fade into the background.
It can look confusing.
If they can stop then… why not all the time?
But it’s not about control in that way.
When the brain is fully engaged,
attention is directed elsewhere.
The urge doesn’t disappear completely,
but it becomes quieter. Less noticeable.
Almost like background noise you stop hearing.
This is why activities that involve focus, rhythm, or creativity
can sometimes reduce how often tics show up in the moment.
Not as a “cure”…
but as a helpful tool.
It also reminds us of something important:
Tics are not constant.
They shift, change, and respond to what’s happening around us.
And understanding those patterns can be really powerful.
